Cats beat up on Lamar and each other, 103-61

by @ 11:01 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

You can put another notch in the win column for Billy Gillispie’s boys, but they still suffered a few losses in the process.  Matt will get you his take later on (probably tomorrow), but here’s a quick recap of what you missed tonight if you were too busy trying to bring back the mustache.

 - Obviously, the big news was the collision between Michael Porter and Ramon Harris about midway through the first half.  Both players were making their way toward a loose ball when Harris started to stand up and hit the top of his head on the left side of Porter’s face.  It was a truly scary moment that delayed the game for about 20 minutes and saw Harris’ mother come onto the floor to check on her son along with trainers and Billy Gillispie.  Ultimately, Harris left the floor on a stretcher and was transported to UK hospital while Porter was taken to the back and given 10 stitches.  Porter returned to the court but did not see any action.  As far as Harris goes, all reports seem to indicate that he will be ok and he was taken in only as a precaution after he reported having shooting pains in his neck.  Its not been made known yet when either player will be available to play again.

And, just as a side note, if you’re one of the people that are cheering that Harris and Porter got injured so Liggins and Miller would play more, you are truly a classless scumbag.  And, that’s coming from a guy who thinks potty humor is brilliant.  Think about it.

 - The big basketball-related news was the breakout game of DeAndre Liggins in the place of Porter.  Liggins stepped up with the starting point guard on the bench and played the type of all-around game that has tantalized fans since his days as a recruit.  The final stat line for Liggins was 17 points on 6-6 shooting (2-2 on FTs), 7 rebounds and 4 assists.  Liggins, just like against West Virginia, looked confident with the ball and got the Cats into their offensive sets when the break wasn’t there - and was even stroking the three ball.  His size and athleticism will always be an asset, but his decision-making and confidence are going to be what makes or breaks his ability to be a big contributor.  Both looked solid again tonight.

 - All of a sudden, some offensive efficiency broke out tonight for UK.  They had 38 field goals and 25 of them were assisted.  And, to make things even more impressive, the team that couldn’t keep a handle on the ball in Vegas had only 16 turnovers.  This still isn’t a fantastic number and I’m sure Billy Gillispie is going to try to correct every single one, but it’s a massive step in the right direction for a team that was second nationally in turnovers entering the game.  At one point in the first half, the Cats had 13 assists and only one turnover.  Go turn on the PS3 and pick up the sticks.  See if you can do that.  Things were very impressive offensively early on.

 - It’s not exactly a big surprise, but Patrick Patterson dominated tonight with 31 points.  He’ll catch a lot of grief for only grabbing three rebounds (which he probably should), but Beans looked very nice offensively.  He missed only one of his twelve shots from the field and knocked down nine out of eleven at the free throw line.  Lamar really had no one that could match up with him, but that’s not really different than a couple of teams that UK has already played when Patterson wasn’t as dominant.  Tonight, he got his touches and he finished.  Again, he looked good running out against the press and beating his man down the floor, but my favorite Patterson play was early in the first half when he saw a man with his back to the ball and threw a bullet from the top of the key to the short corner to Ramon Harris, who finished and drew the foul.  Great stuff from Patterson tonight.

 - Along those same lines, there was some positive signs from the Perry Stevenson-Patrick Patterson high/low game.  Be glad you don’t watch a game with me because as much as that guy you’re watching with demands that Liggins come in for Porter, I probably yell for the Stevenson-Patterson high/low play twice as much.  Late last season, it was the most effective offense for the Cats (except for the whole “Joe and Ramel do whatever you have to do score” play) and it has the potential to be very successful.  Perry Stevenson isn’t the next Dirk Nowitzki, but he is very solid with the free throw jumper and he throws a great entry pass to Patterson from the top.  Tonight, it wasn’t used a whole lot, but it looked good when it was.  I think we can expect to see a lot of this by the time SEC play rolls around.

 - The scorer’s table sure saw a lot of work tonight.  By the time the game was over, 15 players registered some PT for the Cats including 19 minutes for Kevin Galloway and 11 for A.J. Stewart.  Galloway’s time was likely due to a combination of the blowout and Porter’s injury, but he played fairly well.  In fact, he looked pretty good.  He did get beat once or twice on defense, but he was active on the glass with 3 rebounds and dished out 5 assists to his 1 turnover.  He didn’t hit a field goal (0-2), but he got two points at the line.  Oh yeah, he also threw in two blocks for good measure.  Stewart, conversely, didn’t look all that great.  He was firing up shots (3-6 in 11 minutes), but he did get beat on defense a few times and made two turnovers.  Not a great effort, but it was good to see him on the court.

 - Look, we make no apologies about our outward love of all things Josh Harrellson around here.  We’re proud of it.  But, with that being said, I didn’t expect a whole lot out of him this year.  I figured what UK got was another big body to try to get some garbage baskets and to throw around fouls and maybe grab a few rebounds during SEC play.  I was wrong.  Harrellson had 12 and 7 tonight in 24 minutes, but I’m amazed at what a cerebral player he is.  He never seems flustered and even when the game is getting a little frenetic, Harrellson plays under control and brings his teammates back down to where they should be.  Take a few possessions next game to watch him on the floor.  He knows where the open spots are on the floor and things seem to run smoother when he’s on the out there.  A number of times tonight, Harrellson found an open spot to receive a pass and moved the ball to the other side to keep the offense from getting stagnant - something that is incredibly valuable when your point guard play isn’t stellar.  I hope I didn’t just make a “white basketball player” stereotype.  It’s really a thing of beauty.

 - What’s wrong with Jodie Meeks?  I mean, Meeks only had 19 tonight!    Obviously, I’m joking, but it was another good offensive night for Meeks in terms of points, but his 6:1 assist to turnover ratio sure is a thing of beauty.  It helps to be playing an inferior team, but it’s still nice to see a big game out of Patterson and other players stepping up offensively (Liggins, Harrellson) and easing the burden on Jodie.  Outside of one “heat check” three in the first half, nothing seemed forced tonight by Jodie.

 - Mark Krebs better watch his back because Landon Slone might have just taken his spot as the enforcer of the basketball team.  After an intentional foul was called against Lamar when they tried to block a Patterson dunk attempt from behind, things got a little chippy between one of the Cardinals and the walk-on from Paintsville.  One of the players from Lamar threw a ‘bow up in the direction of Slone’s face and he responded with a little shove.  Both players received technicals.  Only one of them received a piece of my heart.  Well done, Landon.

 - Jared Carter had 1 assist and 1 rebound in 4 minutes of action….and two fouls.

That’s it for now.  All in all, it was a very good outing for the Cats outside of that whole collision thing.  Coming off of a very positive trip to Vegas, tonight went as about as well as you could have hoped and things seem to be heading in the right direction.  Saturday’s game with Miami will be another good test to see where this team is.  Jack McClinton better be ready for a rumble.  We know Landon Slone is.

hmmmm….Ky gets beat by what, 19 at NC. Tonight, NC go to Mich St’s home court and is currently beating them by 35 points. Yes, they had their hurt players back but Mich St is supposed to be the 12th ranked team in the land.

  10. Rock_Cat78 Says:

Speaking of AJ, he did have a couple of bad TO’s and defensive lapses BUT he did have one beautifully quick and athletic move on the baseline for a layup. That might have been the prettiest move/play of the night and it was so unexpected. I think my jaw hit the floor on that one.

  19. bleedingblu7 Says:

So, just how good is this UK team? The VMI loss was bad, sure, and none of us liked seeing the UNC beatdown–but that same
UNC team beat #12 Michigan State by 35(and scored 98 pts in the process) and WVU beat a scrappy Ole Miss team on the road
tonight. To put that in perspective, we held a Hansbrough-less UNC to 77, their lowest point total of the year, and held
West Virginia to almost half of what they put up on Ole Miss.

I’m not saying this team is all-world, but we’re seeing consistent marked improvement every time they take the floor, which
    is what good/great teams do.

I’m excited about the progress so far, and can’t wait for Christmas Break, and the lack of practice time restrictions. I
think we’ll see a really solid team head into a weaker than normal SEC slate, and I’m giddy with the thoughts of payback
to the likes of UT and Vandy.

  20. mesacatfan Says:

uk currently has leading scorer in nation and leads nation in fg%.

  21. mesacatfan Says:

UNC had hansbrough tonight so that was definitely part of that win. But the UNC bigs tore us up too so, really didn’t make that much difference. However, UNC is improving and they look really really good. I don’t think even on our best day we will be able to beat UNC but I don’t think there are too many other teams that could either. We are in really good shape though. I am loving the progress. We have got to fix these turnovers though. And our rebounding tonight was crap.

23 that’s just rediculous and you should be banned from commenting. Porter is a tough guy that plays his heart out, so get over it that he’s playing for UK and you wouldn’t even qualify to hand out the gatorade! I hope he and Ramon are going to be ok!UK#1

  32. GoCats2 Says:

    23) is a jackass.
    Great game Cats!
Win and improve, Win and Improve is what it is all about. Against VMI and UNC we were figuring out who we were, sucks the VMI shot so well but I feel this team is just going to keep getting better.
We are getting just what we need with our players. Last year our problem was that all other teams knew they only had to guard 3 players. THis year with Liggins, Miller, and Harrellson the defense has to guard everyone which will mean great things for Meeks and Patterson.
Saturday will be a good test as a ranked team comes to RUPP. Hopefully the crowd will be crazy.
    Good work Cats!

  35. mesacatfan Says:

I saw the stat about jodie earlier tonight on ESPN, but I think that stat is wrong now. It was during halftime of UNC/MSU and ran across the top of the screen. As for the team fg%, got that info from tcp, but looks like that info was wrong too. Guess I should have checked my sources. Sincerely, Dan Rather.

  36. greenwell Says:

Good post 19. Agree 100%. I’m really liking the big guards that are starting to develop. Although PP, Hansbrough, Earl and the like are key cogs in the success of their respective teams, I’m a firm believer that college hoops is ALL ABOUT guard play.

And if we can keep getting great guard play out of BIG AND LONG guards like Meeks, Liggins, Miller, Galloway, no one will want to play this team come March. I’d love to have Lucas here from a depth perspective but I’m not sure where he fits in with BCG. It goes without saying that the TOs have got to subside and there’s no place to go but down.

Speaking of Lucas, I’ve been out of pocket a bit. Are there any updates? Interestingly, if you google “Jai Lucas Update”, the top 2 links are KSR and the top 4 links are UK-related sites. Go Big Blue!

Let Porter be ok, but out for season!
Please let Razor be ok and back soon!

I know for sure that you’re retarded online, and you may just have a slight mental handicap in real life. But next time, try thinking about what you want to say before you write it online, and then put down something totally different. Trust me, I think it’ll work out better for you in the end that way.

Seriously, wft, I don’t like Bush, but it’s not like I’m wishing he goes round 2 with that pretzel. These are kids in college, they have families, Mom’s, Dad’s, Sisters, and in Porters case, a Wife, but you want him to be hurt enough so you can enjoy the season with out him at PG. Grow up man, Grow up.

  38. The King Says:

Oh better add “catfaninwv” to the list too. Please see above post.

  39. mesacatfan Says:

if you wish for injuries for any player, let alone players for your own team, you suck at life. Kill yourself.

is it a good thing when you look at the scoring column and see 19 for meeks and the first thing to come to mind is “ONLY”?

  41. LouisvilleBandWagonFanCraigWon'tBeOnHereForAWhile Says:

Anyone who is happy Porter got hurt is not a UK fan nor a fan of
basketball. Yeah, he might not be a UK caliber PG but he is working his
a$$ off. It isn’t his fault he is playing for UK. What did you expect when
Tubby offered him a scholorship - For Porter to say, “thanks Tubby but I
don’t think I am good enough to play for UK, so use your scholorship on
someone else”? Heck no, he jumped at the opprotunity like a lot of kids would.
Don’t blame Porter bc he isn’t any good, he does the very best he can. Blame
the guy who gave him a scholorship.

#36 I think the Lucas to UK thing is not going to happen. We have Liggins
and Galloway. Both will get better and be good PGs for us.

GJ and KC are both lighting it up so far this season. KC’s team hasn’t played
great competition but he is still putting up great numbers. GJ’s McKinnley team
have played good teams and GJ is doing very good.

As good as the cats are playing, lets not forget how the future CATS have
started their season. KC and GJ both avg over 20 points, Hood scores 42 in
his first game, Vinny 17 points (I think?), Ferguson isn’t lighting it up
but he plays on a team loaded with major D-1 players. Orton is hurt but he
is already NBA defensive ready, right now!

  42. mesacatfan Says:

not to be rude or not wanting HARRIS OR POERTER to get hurt..but how ironic it was 2 of our troublesome players that got hurt…huh..and look at the way we are playing without both of them..not saying we dont need them..just not 25-30 minutes a piece from them!!! that should tell coach G something huh

…Porter being out - hopefully not with anything serious - might be good for this team….

Now you all may be good people, but it doesn’t seem like it with that garbage. It sucks and is without any doubt classless. I’m no blog police - never want to be - but cut it out.

  45. LouisvilleBandWagonFanCraigWon'tBeOnHereForAWhile Says:

#42 get use to it. We will see a ton of former UK recruites lighting it
up. Why? Because Gillispie recruites everyone at some point. We can look
all over college bball this year and see guys UK has recruited lighting it up.
That is a good thing bc it shows we have a coach who is going to outwork
everyone in recruiting, therefor there will be a ton of kids looking at UK.

Better than the last coach who picked out a few guys he wanted and just
concentrated on them and if we didn’t get those few we were screwed

  46. Rock_Cat78 Says:

It almost makes you sad and angry at the same time reading some of these comments. I can’t imagine why anyone would do it even if it were a Duke or UofL player, but one of our own??? 47. Randomnist Says:

Interesting, our RPI is now #30, highest of any SEC team! (UT is next at #35)

#47 if we win out this week, it should only get better.

  49. mesacatfan Says:

    45) totally agree with you. I just wonder why these guys would rather put up numbers like that at…Georgia Tech? At least go to a basketball school. I know its not all about basketball or whatever, but in a perfect world all the great recruits would want to go to Kentucky, IU, UNC, UCLA, or some other storied program right?

  50. champ1023 Says:

Wow, I didn’t watch the game but did people actually cheer for them being injured? Who in the hell does that, that makes me sick. I knew there were some assholes in this world like #23 but come on people. It’s a sport, in no way is it on the level with someones life or career on the line.

Some people suck. If anyone on here was cheering because they got injured, do everyone else a favor and stop calling yourself a Kentucky fan…

Oh yeah, I love coming home from work and seeing butt kickings the Cats put on teams.

Speaking of Utah, did anyone see Andre Miller’s 28 on Derrick Rose last night? I never thought he would recover from our beatdown in the ‘98 championship. Decent NBA player.

  61. mesacatfan Says:

neil everett finally got harris’ name right, he will be in hospital overnight.

  62. LouisvilleBandWagonFanCraigWon'tBeOnHereForAWhile Says:

#56 I think it is probably a smart move for ND, eventhough not the popular
    move.

Coaching changes are hard for a program and right now I don’t know who
ND could get that would be a “for sure” better option. So why take the
risk of lossing the recruiting class if you can’t bring in a coach who
    can turn things around fast?

Nick Saban has really changed the way college fball and bball fans think.
Everyone wants a quick fix. Trust me, Saban is not the rule, he is the
    expection.

I do wonder why ND doesn’t get the same “racist” media talk like UK did
with Tubby. Still bothers me how many fans of other schools, general public,
and Media still view UK and UK fans as racist.

Last time I checked, UK has had a head women’s black bball coach, assistant
black woman coach for the men’s bball team, 10 year black head coach for “THE”
program in college basketball, and the future head fball coach is black.

ESPN/Foxsports have had stuff recently about “if there are enough black coaches
in college football and bball”. Why don’t they give UK some love for being
the expection and not the rule? Why don’t they give UK some respect and love
for stepping over race lines for head coaches, when most others don’t?

Yet people like Whitlock will jump on UK real quick for something that happened back
    in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Somehow ND has gotten a pass. They fire a black head coach and don’t fire
the white head coach for doing worse (especially with his own players).

    I just don’t get it.

-Galloway: Looked REALLY impressive bringing the ball up the floor. He dribbles well to his weak side and has great speed and athleticism. His defense does need work obviously though but he’s a player that I’m excited about seeing more of.

-Liggins: Hands down the go to PG for UK this year. His size is a HUGE asset and he looks like an NBA player pushing the ball up the court. He’s VERY smooth when he plays within his controlled ability.

-Miller: Will easily average 20 minutes per game this year. His b-ball IQ is as good as any I’ve ever seen.

-Harrellson: Calm and collective but I’d give him $100.00 if he’d just follow one of his shots!! LOL.

-Stewart: Slowly coming around. If he can settle down and develop patience and execute plays, he’ll be hard to handle.

-Slone: He’s Cameron Mills with Gimel Martinez’ attitude. I love it!!!!!

-Patterson/Meeks: Superstars at the college level. They would suck in the NBA so they should stay four years at UK!!! LOL

-Porter: I see Mikey as Meeks’ backup. Galloway should be Liggins’ backup. We need Porter’s shot and intensity on the floor.

-Harris: Starter for the rest of the year IMO. He just looks more assertive than Miller although I think Miller’s a better player overall. Harris is more settled and plays GREAT defense and even has his shot falling.

-Carter: For some strange reason, I think big Jared will put a smile on all of our faces before the year is over. I see him breaking out on Senior night while going for 20 points!!!!!

-Legion: SO STUPID FOR LEAVING!!!!!! He would have been incredible in this system.

  71. isaac_mingo Says:

    68) wtf?

  72. mesacatfan Says:

    72) totally agree with your synopsis of Patterson and Meeks :)

  73. LouisvilleBandWagonFanCraigWon'tBeOnHereForAWhile Says:

#65 blame the coach that recruited, not the kid who is doing the very
best he can, working his ass off, and has dedicated four years of his
life trying to represent UK the verye best he can.

How is Porter a detriment? How can a kid who works so hard be a detriment?

The lack of talent at the position (before Liggins) is the detriment
The coach who recruites players who can’t play at this level is a detriment

It isn’t like Porter offered himself a scholorship to UK. All he did was
jump on a great opprotunity when the offer was made. How can you blame him
    for that?

I get pissed when we have players who are simply not good enough to play
at this level but I am pissed at the coach who recruites and offers those
types of players, I am pissed at the coach who can’t recruit better players
    and get better committments.

I will never be pissed at a kid who takes what was offered to him (hell I know
i would and Porter is way better than I ever was). Just because Porter isn’t
the solution doesn’t mean he is the problem. It starts and ends with the head
    coach.

Thankfully, we have a coach who has and will continue to bring in better
    talent

  74. WINNER Says:

If I was Michael Porter, I’d walk to center court, pull down my pants, and tell every classless son of a bitch in Rupp and watching at home to kiss my white ass, and then I’d go somewhere else and play where 95 percent of the fanbase wasn’t sons of bitches.

  75. LouisvilleBandWagonFanCraigWon'tBeOnHereForAWhile Says:

#74 I agree. Tonight I am a UK fan who is embrassed by many of my
    fellow “so called” UK fans.

  76. isaac_mingo Says:

mesa, are your post numbers messed up?

cause the way i’m looking at it, you just told me to get struck by lightning, and you told yourself that you “totally agree with your synopsis of Patterson and Meeks.”

  77. mesacatfan Says:

    uh….you just posted #78

  78. mesacatfan Says:

    right?

  79. isaac_mingo Says:

ok, for some reason it says 76 next to my last post on my computer. hahaha.

  80. mesacatfan Says:

ok so mine are right or yours are right?

  81. mesacatfan Says:

no lightning for you, it is reserved for idiots

  82. isaac_mingo Says:

    i don’t know!? i’m confused, i don’t know who’s replying to whom now!

  83. mesacatfan Says:

    i think yours is right.

  84. WINNER Says:

    75. I’m new to this site, but I am amazed at a few posters on here that you would think would be true blue. Note to all: If you think seeing two of our own players getting seriously hurt is a GOOD thing, then the Kentucky Wildcats don’t need your support. You are free to root *I mean, bring down*, any other team of your choice.

  85. lexslamman Says:

    74.

And I would say (in my best Ike Clanton impression): “Well, Goodbye then”

Seriously, the only reason he was signed was as an attempt to get at his team-mate, Oliver, who fell through. If Jasper were here, he’d be seeing the 2-4 minutes of mop-up time his basketball ability calls for.

  86. admankyfan Says:

Despite Porter’s consistently horrid performances, I could not be more disappointed that he got hurt. He is part of our team, part of the Kentucky family.

As for Harris, he is becoming one of my favorite players this season. He plays just as hard, if not harder, then anyone else. He was having a monster game, and has done a lot for us this season.

I wish both of them quick recoveries.

  87. Clandestine Says:

#65. How could we see it any other way? lexslamman is a detriment to this site.

  88. drewster Says:

I thought Stewart looked pretty good last night relative to what we normally see out of him. At times he does look asleep on defense, but he had a couple of really nice offensive moves. He just needs to get more focused and aggressive on defense and he’ll see lots more playing time.

  89. jman3715 Says:

Gotta love Carter but man, he is about the slowest 7 foot white boy I have ever laid eyes on and I have already seen at least three of them in my life!

  90. 7isntenuf Says:

    89) He was flying up and down the court last night. Don’t know who you were watchin, but comparing him to shigari, I’d say Jared was Big Brown and Shigari = Mr. Ed.
    87) BRAVO! HERE, HERE!

  91. cbuswidcats Says:

Is nobody allowed to voice their opinions anymore? Most of these posts said they didn’t wish for what happened to Porter and Harris. but the fact is it did, and yes it allowed some guys to get more minutes that they had been calling for. They are simply stating the positives of a negative situation. Some people over-react today about anything.

  92. V-in-K Says:

#74) Maybe 95% of the posters but definitely not anywhere near that regarding total fan base…more like 5% of the whole are the truly obnoxious loud ones and 100% of them are A-holes. Glad Porter is okay and Harris will be back!!

  93. WAMPUSCAT Says:

Last night at the game the crowd was so focused on making sure P Pat was ok, nobody realized what sloan did till it was over. he probably would have gotten a standing o.
