pic via here, found here. You don’t wanna see the set. Trust me.
I may be alone here, but does anyone else think that someone—Patterson, perhaps—should have lit-up the overzealous Lee Steiden (the street-clothed one) after Sosa’s three dropped with 2.Ican’tbelievethatgarbageshotfell remaining? In doing so, wouldn’t Steiden have been T’d up? Live and learn, I guess.
Obviously, I’m jesting (kind of…not really, though). Regardless, and I hate to revisit this so soon, but there were some definite positives evident by game’s end. First of all, Gillispie’s goal has been reached: This team is super tough. Apparently, I’m some sort of masochist, because I’ve watched and re-watched the highlights from yesterday’s game several times, and a team with lesser mental fortitude would’ve folded and gotten destroyed. If not after the 12-0 run following Gillispie’s technical, then definitely when it found itself down 7 with mere seconds remaining. And we damn near pulled off the Duke-over-Maryland-esque comeback, due mostly to our resolve, with an assist to their ineptitude. This team doesn’t quit, and, damn it, doesn’t that count for something?
After the, you know, ugliness, I stared at the floor for, like, 35 minutes. It gave me a chance to think, and hate, mostly hate, but it eventually led to an epiphany: these teams are headed in opposite directions. Louisville deserved to win yesterday, no doubt. They shot the ball better than they have all year, and T-Will and Sosa played great. They earned it. You can’t expect to go on the road and turn the ball over 20+ times and beat a good team. However, we almost did. If anything, that shows the amount of heart and determination embedded in this team.
It showed something else, too. Louisville’s not very good. Or smart, but we already knew that. They entered the season ranked in the top 5, armed with more talent than Pitino’s ever had at UL. They had a top-ranked recruit; a couple lottery picks; and a stable full of shooters that could keep them in any game. However, something happened. The season started. Now, at the season’s midpoint, Louisville has a center who can’t catch or play defense; a disinterested forward who refuses to play to his strengths; an overambitious slasher that is waaaay too in love with his jump shot; and a cadre of shooters and ball-handlers who just can’t cut it on the big stage. Worst of all, they’re hydroplaning into Big East play, with all their inadequacies in the open, and they can’t feel too great about how the game went yesterday. Pitino has a way of making his team’s play their best ball in March; however, I don’t see them competing with Pitt or UConn or Notre Dame or Georgetown on a consistent basis.
We, on the other hand, enter conference play pissed off. We could’ve won that game, but we didn’t. We fought all the way back, and fell short. As a team, we will be hungrier than ever. Furthermore, we’re only going to get better. Another scorer will emerge, whether it be Stevenson, Miller, or Liggins. Or, hell, Porter. No matter who picks up the scoring slack, we have a soft conference schedule and a team that looks ready to dismantle their weaker opponents. The turnover situation is alarming, but that may have had a lot to do with the atmosphere. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.
I guess this was just a long and convoluted way of saying that I think we’re coming together at the right time, while they are in disarray. This game had blowout tagged to it from the moment the UNLV game ended. You knew they couldn’t play that flat twice in a row on their home floor. Still, we battled, pushing them to the brink, and they won on an amazing shot that I would’ve been happy with them taking 1,000,000 times out of 1,000,000.
OK, 999,999 times.

UK officially on the bubble…
Joe Lunardi has us in his “last 4 in.”
Not that it matters, just poop for thought.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
i would have to agree with lunardi right now. we are on the bubble. we can definately move up but we need a few quality wins to get off the bubble. very capable but have to prove it on the court.

i have to completely disagree on the front that louisville is falling apart. i personally think that louisville is a hell of a team and thats why they got the win. they have superior talent they have just yet to put it all together, maybe thats something pitino has to look in the mirror. but i think louisville has the ability to go deep into the tourney in addition i think uk does as well. i think this game speaks more about uk than is does louisville. i think both teams should come away from this game with their heads up.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
gonna be hard to be last 4 in when we should be at least 12-4 or better in SEC play. that puts at 23 wins and will be enough to get in. HMMMMM the number 23 stands out today doesn’t it!!
January 5th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I love this post. Very well said. There has not been a single second of a game this year where you felt like this team was giving up or packing it in. I’m very impressed with how hard they play and how mentally tough they are. It might not always be pretty, but I love watching them.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I was thinking around the same, we will prob have 23-25 wins come tourny time, if we are last 4 in with that then thats some bullshit! Joe Retardy prob hasn’t watched us too much this season, he’s unaware that we’re pissed and about to start crushing every team that gets in our way!
January 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
If you told me a month ago that UofL would shoot 55% from 3 and we would have 21 TOs, I’d say we lose by 30. They played their best game of the year and won by a last second 25-footer at home. I did check out your link and thought the Edgar-love fest is hilarious. Just wait until next time Pitino tells him to drive and dish and he jacks a bomb instead.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
We have to protect our Homecourt, we should NOT lose a single game in rupp for the rest of this season.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I was hoping that Oxford shirt wearing douche was going to get knocked out of his wingtips.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
When I watch us play I almost wonder ig BCG needs an offensive coordinator like Donovan’s defensive coordinator he hired. Gillispie is a great recruiter, a really good motivator and an excellent defensive coach. I think where he lacks a little (and it could change with more experience, better players, etc.) is an offensive concept that can reliably score 40 minutes a game.
I enjoyed yesterday’s game a lot and thought both teams played well. I too think we are ready to explode and Patterson IS A BEAST. I am very happy with were we are in BCG year 2. I think this team may be better than we all realize. We just need one of the threesome of Liggins, Miller or Galloway to take it to another level to be really, really good.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
I heard he was using a tired cliche about the ref’s off-the-court lifestyle. That’s what it was.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Te tough talk is all true but fact is we are going to have to dig our way back into the national discussion. Very little room for a slip up the rest of the year. There are not enough good teams in the conferance to make a statement. I’m afraid this is going to be just like last year, trying to make the tournament.

12) your wife was jumping up and down for the tards and Billy’s Coach of the Year ring fell out. That’s all.

14.) That was kind of uncalled for dont you think???
January 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
The original #12 that I posted about was removed. It was in response to some smart remark about Billy dropping his flask on the floor resulting in the “T”.

Anything but Gatorade, that post was not intended for you, but for the original #12.

Sosa’s shot did something else: Reinforce in his mind he can cheat percentages. The game they are eliminated in March, with the game in the balance, Sosa will take the same shot - a bad shot. Their season over. We laugh.

Yet another reason why WordPress kinda sucks. As much as I enjoy schaedenfreud at the Cards’ expense, I’d prefer to have beaten them yesterday straight up. Curses, you time-space continuum!

At least there was one kid on the U of L sideline running around saying “I go to my classes, I go to my classes”

You guys are heading in the right direction….with a big large L next to Louisville. I hate to bring you back to reality, but MICHAEL PORTER is you starting PG. MICHAEL PORTER. You have a bench full of guys that are just happy to put on a collegiate jersey. The one thing you have going for you is that the SEC blows. 1 ranked team, and even they suck. You have 2 players worthy of note and everybody else is a yawn.
By the way if getting the win wasnt good enough, we got 2 commits out of the situation that Billy Clyde was in on, and Sosa found himself. The most beautiful thing about this win is that everything we do from now on can be directed back to this game, it makes it that much sweeter. Or in your case it makes it burn that much more.

You know, there’s a lot of talent on this club Charlie. The veterans are starting to play back to form and the rookies are developing faster than I thought. There’s 2 or 3 potential all-stars in there… All we need is something to bring it all together.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Next week UL will lose at #17 Villanonva. Then #13 ND comes in - a loss. Pittsburg next is a guaranteed blowout L. At #9 Syracuse later on - L. UConn, Georgetown, Marquette - who may be the sleeper in the Big East - 3 more L’s. Then WV gets two shots. Say they split……..8 losses for the Tards in conference are most likely.

January 5th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
We have such an inferiority complex that we’ll take a miracle win against an unranked Kentucky team and turn it into the f#@king national championship. With that win we have stamped our ticket straight to the Final Four. No team has a chance against us!
January 5th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Matt, can we discriminate on the homosexual community so as not to allow Louisvillefancraig and JSmit09 to post on here. Thus preventing the rest of us from having images like their tongues in Sosa’s butthole in our minds.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Louisville would be better off begging Crum to come back and dump Pitino.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Louisville may get lucky and Pitino leaves for the Arizona job.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Pitino is not near the coach he was at Kentucky. 8 years at Louisville, 1 miracle Final Four and 0 championships. 8 years at Kentucky, 3 Final Fours, 1 championship and 1 runner-up.

Of course they do….internet gangsters that is.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Rumor has it that Arizona has already been talking to Pitino. Pitino is getting tired of the Louisville fan base and unrealistic expectations of being a national champion which will never happen again now that Crum is no longer the coach.
January 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Looservill Craigfan, you’re right. You came within a gnat’s ass of getting beat at home, on your best shooting night of the year by a team with Michael Porter manning the helm. Congratulations.
I hate Louisville. Some cardarsehole on the card forum in the above mentioned link called Porter’s and Stevenson’s 3s shit shots? How about that? Sosa makes the biggest, hottest, steamiest, shit shot of the season for either team, but it was Porter and Stevenson who threw the shit. Figures. Assholes.
January 5th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
If Kentucky is that tough and loses to Louisville, then what is UNLV?
I’m proud of their comeback, but at Kentucky, I thought we were proud of the wins.
Since when did all the negative nellies who raged on everything from the past few years suddenly become Little Miss Sunshines?
New Rule: If you’ve been critical for the past few years, you have to stay consistent. Suddenly, it isn’t PC to take a fair critical look at our team.
IROC-ZWildcat: STFU you communist!!
January 5th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
My two favorite teams: Kentucky and the team playing Looserville
January 5th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
51 UNLV caught UL on an average night, Not the same as UK catching UL on one of their best performances of the year and then hitting a very long shot to win. And I’m not saying it was a luck shot like most fans. I was probably the reason SALSA made that shot, I was soooo happy to see him with the ball, When he has the ball I say stuff like, “What kind of bone-head play are you gonna make this time SALSA” DAMNIT!!!!!!
Go CATS!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Debating with hardcore UL fans is pointless. Their team won last night, and for two years in a row. Their program is not as good as UKs, does not have the fanbase, tradition or even the same momentum. I think at the core of their being, they know this truth that they are not UK and even the great Pitino cannot lead them past UK as a program. Sometimes rivals win games. Enjoy the hard fought win, UL fans. But UL will never surpass UK. If they could not do it in the 80’s, they certainly cannot do it now.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
53 Not ONE of their best performances. THE best. They have not shot the ball that well all season PERIOD.
January 6th, 2009 at 9:06 am
C’mon fellas, Craig is a genius! Read all his comments in this thread. He is not a UL fan. He is making fun of them big time. I think it is awesome, keep up the good work man.
