[Moderated by Matt Jones]

Jodie picked out a nice place! Its close to Dollywood, very spacy, and has lots of bathrooms. It was very affordable in this market — only 54 points (15-22 FG, 10-15 3pt, 14-14 FT), and no down payment! The previous owners — the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team — seemingly gave up the place with very little fight.
Really. How do you let Jodie Meeks touch the ball in the second half ever! That was by far one of the biggest failures of defense. Jodie’s tenth (ninth? I can’t remember) 3-pointer was due to Michael Porter driving to the lane and then throwing to a completely uncovered Meeks at the top of the key. Really?
In the second half, the announcing team had Pat Summit join them. They asked, “how do you stop Jodie Meeks?” She said (I’m paraphrasing), “he is a no-touch player. You have to prevent him from ever touching the ball.”
Now she’s gotta negotiate renting out T-BA with Mister No Touch.
Matt, I officially request we have “we hate [insert team here] day” for every game the rest of the season.
You know your boy Jones will be on to give you his notes. Until then, bounce people. Bounce with joy.

January 13th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
Meeks also outscores all three UT’s top scorers in game combined.
January 13th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Jodie was Awesome!!!!!!!!! Way to go Cats!
January 13th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Don’t remember Chris Lofton ever doing anything close to that!!!
January 13th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
Meeks #1!! Tennessee sucks! I’ll take Darius Miller any day over Scotty Hopson. The only way he’s one and done is if he flunks out.
January 13th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
Awesome Baby. Great National Exposure. I watched from Oregon. Wow what a game. Outstanding defense. Good offensive movement. Great Great Great Game

Scotty Hop blows….I am so happy we didn’t get him….he would be wasting away on the bench all season anyway…..Billy G knows what he is doing
January 14th, 2009 at 12:02 am
Jodie was amazing, I hope he’s still feeling it on Sunday in Athens. I’ll be there along with almost every other Atlanta-area cat fan!

January 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I’m completely serious when I say Pat Summit could of thrown down the headphones and coached a better game than Bruce Pearl on the spot. That offense would have been painful to watch if I didn’t hate them so much.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am
This helps in every way, national exposure for Meeks, our team, and also all the possible recruits watching at home.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:10 am
This was history tonight. Meeks is a special player folks, pray we have him for one more year (along with PPat!).
January 14th, 2009 at 12:10 am
WOW! That is all that I can say. After the game I started doing a bit of research and reflecting.
1. I guess this was how it was to watch Pistol Pete EVERY night.
2. Jodie is mixture of Delk/Anderson which is a lethal combination.
3. Derek Miller hit 8 3-pointers in 3 different games during the 89-90 season. I remember him getting on a roll but did not realize he did 3 times.
4 Imagine what BCG would have done last year with a healthy Jodie.
5. I was glad to see Tubby leave and felt it was best for involved. However, I am not a Tubby hater and for those that are–Thank the man for bring Jodie here and let it go.
6. Rocky Stop did not have the answers. I thought they might make adjustments to stop Jodie in the second half but it was obvious that their game plan was to let him get his and make others beat us because he can not keep up this pace (like Rupp would say about Pete). Fortunately for us, he kept it up because he is a STUD.
Congrats and thanks Jodie.

Meeks and this team can go far. Playing D, Billy G continuing to coach em up, and players finding their roles (Miller tonight)…we are looking good. 3 of the 4 losses are to current Top 25 teams.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:14 am
Meeks almost beat the SEC scoring record by Chris Jackson (LSU) 55 points! This was amazing! SO glad I saw this game tonight! Even ESPN is giving props!
January 14th, 2009 at 12:15 am
HEY UK FANS, do Gillispie and the CATS a favor and help me call
out the UK fans on here who been bashing Gillispie. We don’t need
them jumping on the bandwagon. THERE IS NO ROOM ON THE WAGON, SORRY!

To the drunk Vol fan whose ass I about whipped at the last football game: Told your stupid ass that we were gonna light your head up IN KNOXVILLE on the hardwood. Yall will NEVER COME CLOSE to use in basketball, so keep wishing. See yall in Rupp…Cause its gonna be 10 times worse.
For some reason I thought of this:

I guess Galloway outplayed Liggins in pactice?
January 14th, 2009 at 12:18 am
This was a huge win and not just because it was UT and that stupid
smirk Pearl and Hopson have on their face.
It was a marque win on national tv where every recruit is going to see
that Gillispie gets his superstars the ball and an opprotunity to shine.
It was a good road win and a quality win for us.
and how stupid did Hopson look airballing 3s
January 14th, 2009 at 12:19 am
i am sure it was posted somewhere in the 500+ comments in the game thread, but what was the story with liggins?

#33 Good lord, are people still questioning Gillispie, especially after
tonight. Maybe tonight Gillispie should get a pass, he just outcoached
Pearl again. Maybe the man knows what he is doing, at least better than you.
Gillispie probably didn’t want to throw Liggins in a game like this for his
first time. Let Liggins build up to it

Tennessee is and always will be a
FootballGirls Basketball School. Then only thing worse than Tennessee Men’s Basketball are Tennessee fans. They really are the worst.
They don’t cheer when their team is behind (but they keep wearing orange overalls).
When they lose they always blame something (refs, refs, and refs).
They have to be stupid, hello… they’re rooting for Tennessee
Now I know what the one Tennessee fan left (macon_VolFan) will say and that is “well how do you expect me to root for what Pearl put on the floor tonight?”
So they aren’t really fans at all, they are just Tennessee orange memorabilia buyers who are stupid enough to continue to tell people they are Tennessee fans. LMAO
January 14th, 2009 at 12:22 am
#35 — I saw in the John Clay liveblog, and again in the ASoB comments, that Liggins walked out of practice the other day. When asked, Billy said it was a coach’s decision.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:22 am
Great game!! Meeks was on fire!! Porter played great!! Great coaching plan from BCG. And was on ESPN for the world to see!!

#37 Porter looked very good. Gillispie said in his post game “it was
just a coaching decision” why Liggins didn’t play. Let it go, let coach, coach.
I think he just didn’t want to throw Liggins in a game like this, considering
how wild he can get.

BCG said on the radio that (I’m paraphrasing) “Liggins is an unbelievable talent and we really really really really really(ok, not that many) need him on the floor, but it was a coaching decision not to play him…. A non answer -almost.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:25 am
I’ve seen better half court offenses in middle school basketball. Talented athletes are drawn to Pearl’s playground style basketball and supposed up-tempo game, but it just leads to under-achievement. If you’re a player and want to reach your full potential, go to Lexington. Scotty, have fun playing playground ball in Knoxville and getting your tail handed to you when you play decent teams.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:25 am
#41 thanks–is that not a newsworthy story anymore? i know it was covered before too much, but how many chances does he get?
January 14th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Another good thing for Jodie, his dad came up for the game. I bet he’s feeling pretty good heading back to Geo. tonite.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am

January 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am

January 14th, 2009 at 12:28 am
47 thanks. 46–not bashing BCG, just curious. i have been on his bandwagon from day one and not second guessing him really.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:28 am
Pearl was pissed in his post game conference. I mean pissed
and kind of embarrassed
January 14th, 2009 at 12:29 am
but not as embarassed as Hopson’s shooting ability
January 14th, 2009 at 12:29 am

January 14th, 2009 at 12:30 am
I sure hope that Jodie has good practices the rest of the week. I would hate for him to be benched for a poor practice.
Jodie “the Amazing” Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkksssss
January 14th, 2009 at 12:31 am
What a performance by Meeks. Not to kill the mood of a sweet victory or anything, but does anyone know why Liggins didn’t play tonight? Is he Billy’s doghouse again?
January 14th, 2009 at 12:32 am
Pearl is an embarrassment…he’s all hype & marketing, no substance and it shows.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:33 am
#58– A simple assumption here but……If I had to guess. The game plan was play under control and take UT of their plan to run. Liggins being young would have gotten emotional and wanted to push the pace. He will be fine.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:33 am
#59 Pearl has done a good job teaching Hopson how to shot, LOL
January 14th, 2009 at 12:34 am
or I could just read the comments above this and have a pretty good idea….my bad guys
January 14th, 2009 at 12:34 am
Hopson sucked, badly. Darius, props my man, you are doing great!
January 14th, 2009 at 12:36 am
That win looked a lot more impressive in person!!! I can’t believe that performace!
January 14th, 2009 at 12:39 am
I’m glad Jodie’s dad was there for the game, maybe he’ll be in Athens Saturday also.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:40 am
60. Hopefully you are correct. Porter did a mighty fine job handling the press. Actually…all 8 players played a solid to exceptional game. Meeks just became legend at UK.

1. Billy D. snubs the Cats for Orlando then backs out.
2. Magic set a record with 23 3’s tongight.
3. Meeks’ number is 23 and there must have been something in the air tongight from 3 land.
4. Meeks scores 54 points.
5. PP’s number is 54.
6. PP snubbed Billy D.

“Blessed is the Meeks”…great ESPN title on the Men’s Bball Homepage.
I was so stoked that this was on ESPN since I actually get most ESPN stuff here in Afghanistan. What a great morning (for me at least)… I was late to work, but who cares when I was watching that!

#49 tyson & #58 JB - Did you ever play a competitive team sport?
Every guy (or gal) on the team has a love hate relationship with the coach. Some are more vocal than others and that’s what makes the world go around. BCG seems to be able to handle things in a way in which everyone is family. He wants to hammer home that he will never give up on them regardless of how tough things become.
By letting them see this consistently they eventually incorporate it into themselves. That’s why the ones who have gotten a year or more of it can put it on the line like they do on a consistent basis.
BCG knows he’s asking way more out of these kids than anyone ever will. And that’s not to put down what they might have accomplished in the past or what they might face in the future. He’s asking more. He has to be able to expect raw human emotion to come out at times (and he does).
Liggins has so much capability that he seems to be ocassionally fighting with the reocurring thought that he can do it an easier way, especially when times get real tough. But deep inside he also seems to know that BCG might be just the thing that will combined with his raw potential help him slingshot his basketball career into the stratosphere.

I can’t help myself.
Are they going to replay this game late tonight? I know ESPN sometimes does… anyone know?
January 14th, 2009 at 12:51 am
71. I really wasn’t trying to start any shit, just seemed kind of random that he didnt play. Billy G knows what the hell he is doing so I certainly wasn’t questioning him by any means. Hell, Liggins could have had the flu for all I knew.

[...] We were watching the night Jodie Meeks broke the Kentucky single game scoring record against Tennessee, sending UK fans into a frenzy of jokes about UT. [...]
January 14th, 2009 at 6:55 am
This is what’s wrong with UK fans. Jodie Meeks has the BEST performance EVER and fans are wondering why DeAndre Liggins doesn’t play. WHO CARE? UK won and UT got outplayed and “Don’t get me dooowwwn” Brrrrruce Pearl got out coached. UK weathered not 1 but 2 storms and still won by 18 points. It’s time to quit playing Monday morning quarterback especially after conference, rivalry, rpi helping, record breaking, historic WINS!!
January 14th, 2009 at 7:38 am
74. Ditto
80. loved the win. just asking a question, thats all.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Vols fans need to realize that until Pearl starts stressing defense, he will not bring big time success (NCAAT) to UT. No way Tubby, Ricky P, Billy G, any coach worth a d@mn would let a player go off like that on their home floor.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:55 am
#82 - Pearl does hang a lot of pride and effortdeterminationheart on defense. I’ve seen UT play two other times this year, and they played better overall team defense in those games. That being said, I don’t think they have a guy who can hang with a guard like Meeks. The rockytoptalk.com guys joked that Meeks might have a career game, given what they’ve seen with other small, quick and very accurate guards have done to them.

Wow, yeah…deadspin linked to this post. I’ll be darned. Gimel has arrived. I think you have to send the real Gimel $100 and a moustache comb or something.
