Our friends at Deadspin posted a report yesterday concerning some improper contact between Kansas coach Bill Self and and super-recruit John Wall during a recent tournament. A reporter covering the Missouri tournament witnessed the exchange, which occurred during an evaluation period when coaches can observe recruits but can’t have contact, a rule Coach Self doesn’t seem to have much time for. Here’s the meat of it:
That’s what was so curious when Kansas coach Bill Self came rolling through. … Of course, Wall is the top uncommitted recruit. Self had to know I was a reporter and even said hello to me. I just thought he’d stand there, maybe even wave to Wall to let him know he was there. Instead, when the Holy Rams poured out of the locker room, Self was excited:
Self: “Johnny, great win man. You really played well.”
Wall: “Thanks.”
Self: “I’m not supposed to be talking to you, and you know that, but I just wanted to tell you that was a great win.”
Then Self vanished.
I understand that this is a minor violation, but if Coach Gillispie did something like this, I’m guessing it would take Jeff Goodman 0.00006 seconds before he wrote an article condemning us as cheaters.
In fact, just today, Self admitted to the contact and has left it in the hands of the NCAA to determine if the contact was improper. So we’ll just have to wait and see, but while you’re here, read the NCAA definitions of “Contact” and “Evaluation Period” and judge for yourself.
Oh yeah, here’s a link to the original article by a writer who looks like he’s 14.

Wow, how dumb is that. I think it should automaticlly prohibited Wall from attending Kansas, with a mandate that he instead attends a SEC team that has won at least 5 NCAA Championships.

Man when I get in first, I really get in first…..sorry.

Lapse in judgement by Self, but most intelligent people realize how puerile some of the NCAA rules are.
Let’s get back to the business of UKBB. Tennessee plays in Nashville tonight….a Vandy win would leave both UT and Vandy with 2 SEC losses….and would leave UK in control of its own destiny so far as the Tennessee contingent is concerned.
Which leads us to Florida. The gators play in Columbia tomorrow night (tough game) and follow up Saturday with a game in Nashville. This time next week, we could see UK in complete control of the SEC.

I personaly don’t think there is much of a violation. However, it obviously is a violation. As a coach seated on the coaches committee board, he should be setting an example so the NCAA should make some type of sanctions.
Remember, Self was the person that Tubby asked to speak to BCG so that BCG did not think that the request (that no one follows now except BCG) that no coaches offer kids before they are entering their Junior year. They did not want BCG to think this was directed towards his actions.

Agree with 081305 about the topic. Though he might have put himself in a position to make “contact” per the rules, he did not give more than the “greeting” that they allow. Did he violate the rules…. yes. Was it more like going 72 in a 70 mph zone….yes. I don’t like Kansas, but I really don’t have a problem with Bill Self, and he’s the mentor for my favorite coach: ours. It’s not like he sent a representative to see a guy play during the dead period….ughhum K.

Whole lotta nothin going on here…If BCG did the same thing we would be defending him saying this is nothing.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Where’s Tubby and all his NABC goons?
January 20th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
well its for sure not a big deal, but rules are rules and if you jump on one u should jump on all, cant pick and choose who to crack down on

8)I agree.
10) LOL!

What’s bizarre is that Self acknowledged he was not supposed to be talking to Wall so he knew it was a violation. It’s as if by admitting he was not supposed to be talking to Wall he was trying to express how important Wall was to him. “Hey, you are so important to the future of Kansas basketball that I’m willing to break a minor rule.”

Bill Clinton didn’t inhale!

Bill Clinton also “Did Not have sexual relations with that woman!” It is all about an individuals interpretation.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
This is not ‘nam, Bill. There are rules.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Self shouldnt have put himSELF in a that position. He knew what he was doing and did it. That is what you call a cheap shot. In this competive market called College Basketball you have to do whatever it takes to get ahead.
January 20th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
It totally depends on the definition of “is”, guess ol slick willy is picking out some poor unsuspecting intern as we speak.
January 20th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Personally I think this is more about the 14 year old (as Hunter puts it) trying to land a big scoop than it is about Bill Self saying “hi” to a kid. The other poster was right when they said had Billy G done this we would be defending it to the bitter end.
Bill said hi and I can’t talk to you. Not an acknowledgement of him doing wrong as much as it was a statement not to let Wall think he was being cold to him for only saying hi good game.
They should tell Allen Vaugh to comb his hair and call them when there is something serious.
January 20th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
yeah get a life allen vaughn. cough cough.

Hey UK fans… let’s not focus on beating up on good friends of Gillispie. Self is eager and made a mistake just like many coaches do. Just because he’s damn good at what he does he has more eyes on him to point it all out.
To me this is not improper even if the rules say it is. Sure Self has to follow the rules, and I’m CERTAIN that he will pay the price for this decision. Handing the kid an envelope with cash in it is a different story.
Let’s make sure we have something to throw before we pick up a piece of dust and launch. Even if other programs aim at us with every piece of dust they can find.
January 20th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
As long as Wall doesn’t go to KU I will be okay with this minor infraction. I think Wall will end up at NC State.
January 20th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
ZZzzzzzz. Boring. Waste of a column if you asked me. This goes on all the time and he was probably putting himself in a place where he could be seen and/or talk to the coach. From my understanding this happens all the time and is not much of an issue. So you mean to tell me if Wall came up to him and asked him how he did, he’s supposed to give the “zipped up lips” motion, as if to say that he can’t talk? Please…
He said hi and good game. More pressing things to deal with and write about.

Guilty as charged.
