Bruce Springsteen’s Monday News and Views

One of the classic Super Bowls of all time finished up last night and now all the talking heads are busy spinning their story lines. Is Big Ben now headed for a Hall of Fame career….is Larry Fitzgerald the best receiver in the game…..will Kurt Warner return to the football field? While these are all legitimate sports questions, the big storyline coming from the game in my view was of course, the performance of Bruce Springsteen. Ever since Prince stormed onto the national stage a few years ago and produced a Halftime show that blew everyone else out of the water, the musical tribute in between halves of football has been the highlight of Super Bowl parties at and around the KSR Compound. With this year’s party filled with KSR folks saying goodbye to the Turkey Hunter, we put money on what songs would be played (Glory Days and Born to Run were gimmies) and made jokes about how bad the Sopranos guy, the Conan guy and Bruce’s wife look in HD. But nothing prepared us for the running Springsteen slide that put his crotch directly in America’s living rooms for a full second. When Bruce first hit the stage and did the “Matrix” back bend that was fairly impressive for a man of 56, middle-aged women everywhere swooned….but was anyone prepared for the crotch in the camera shot? Is Bruce the first to actually produce such an effect on national television? I personally think it broke new ground and will be the focus of water cooler talk everywhere. Yes Santonio Holmes made a great catch and yes, Larry Fitzgerald’s dad writes for a newspaper….but Bruce Springsteen slid crotch first into America on Super Bowl Sunday…..we certainly didnt see that one coming.

To the news…..

(1): The disappointment from Saturday still lingers across the Big Blue nation as the team and fanbase try to move forward from a disappointing loss in Rupp Arena. The Cats are now part of a huge logjam of teams that legitimately believe they can win the SEC title, joining Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi State and LSU in a six way race for the prize. The Cats still must play 6 games against those five teams and the race for the title will begin anew on Tuesday night in Lexington. But what was lost on Saturday, and may be difficult to get back for the Cats, is a chance to make a splash on the national scene and become a team that can get a decent seed on Selection Sunday. Absent a 9-0 or 8-1 finish, the Cats are now destined to be in the 6-9 seed range that has plagued them for the last three season. With such a seed, a run is difficult to make and seeing the second weekend requires a big upset. The Cats’ SEC schedule this year was back-loaded, and after winning at Tennessee, finishing the first eight games with zero or one loss seemed right in the Cats’ wheelhouse. Now, with one game remaining on Tuesday, 2 losses are assured and 3 possible. There is certainly disappointment there.

(2): However as we have learned in the last two years, you cant yet count out the Gillispie coached team. Even through all the injuries last year and the tough start this year, the team has found a way to bounce back and I fully expect them to do that on Tuesday against a Mississippi State team that the Cats match up with much better than their last two opponents. When you talked to the players after the game on Saturday, you sensed their eagerness to get back on the court and try to redeem the feeling of losing at home to an inferior SEC opponent. I expect a big game Wednesday, especially from Jodie Meeks, who said he knew that he had to make more happen offensively for this team.

(3): A couple of Gillispie notes worth sharing…..first he did call and apologize to Jeanine Edwards, a classy gesture from the Coach, acknowledging that he handled the situation poorly on Tuesday night. Edwards will be part of the ESPN crew this Tuesday and I think if he made some kind of joke with her right before the halftime interview, it would be a funny and knowing thing to do…..second, there has been a lot of chatter on message boards and between members of the media about a Gillispie-Liggins encounter that took place on the bench and was loud enough that many around the bench heard and saw it. It was the latest in what has become a series of difficult confrontations between the two that have gone on all season long. I must admit that in my four years of doing this, I have never seen a relationship like these two have and Liggins gets yelled at more than any player I have been around…..while also probably talking back to a Coach more than I am used to as well. BUT having said that, Gillispie still plays him and actually said after the game that besides the last three point shot Liggins took, he thought he had played well. So the reactions on all of this should likely be tempered….these two guys have been through this before and made it through….my guess is that it will happen again.

(4): Signing Day is coming and I am told that the Cats still have one more commitment that has not been made public. According to my source, the commitment of Terrell Mitchell was in the pocket for a week and there is another player that has committed to the Cats that “no one has been able to figure out yet.” I am interested to see if we will find out before Signing Day on Tuesday. As for Signing Day, Rob will be here all day that day to give you news as it happens and to give you all the scoop on what will be one of the better classes that this program has ever taken in. Stay tuned as it will be exciting.

We taped a Kentucky Sports Radio podcast on Sunday afternoon, where we review the players and the season so far with the Turkey Hunter, Mosley and Hubby. For those of you familiar with the old podcasts and the famous Marshall County Hoopfest version, you will definitely want to check this out as it is an hour of good fun and old school KSR glory. We hope to have it up this afternoon. Stay tuned all day as we shift to Signing Day and Mississippi State.

    Good stuff.

    Nice move by Gillispie

  2. PitinoRulz

Awesome! The boss rocks. Best halftime show ever.

  3. 10, 2, and 4

Yes, the halftime rocked like it should be! Nothing too elaborate or overdone….rock ‘n roll!

  4. StitchJonesSays

The Boss Delivered!!! He was awesome!!!

  5. bigbcurry

Steelers Baby! Got one for the cack!

  6. BillyClyde4President

I have (2) lower arena tickets to UK’s game Tuesday night. Any interested persons should email me at

  7. ThetaChiUKfan

Yeah, I am proud of Billy G. I am also proud of the football team’s coaching staff. They are building a program, I love it.

  8. jodieispure

i think halftime sucked other than the crotch slide which had me lmao, the rest i couldnt even unferdstand, not to mention i think that they was targeting 60 year old people with “the boss” oh well

  9. scfcats

The crotch slide made up for the AZ loss. I was wondering if any one else noticed that. I also wonder if he intended to slide crotch first into a camera lens. Either way, great super bowl half time moment.

  10. adaircam4

Usually the super bowl halftime performances are really bad, and this year was not different. Besides Tom Petty last year, the music at halftime is always awful. Do Americans really like this garbage music? I guess they do.

  11. ThetaChiUKfan

Bobby Knight possibly going to UGA??? I hope so!

  12. soup

Does anyone find it odd that Billy Gillispie’s name is not coming up in any of the coaching vacancy searches? Just sayin…

  13. ThetaChiUKfan

    12- why would it?

  14. champ1023

12: I’d assume they realize he is at the pinnacle of all coaching jobs and leaving this early into his tenure would be stupid.

  15. bigbcurry

I just watched the 2nd half of the UK vs. USC game, and in no way is Coach Gillispie responsible for this loss. I have said it since the beginning of the season, “This is a rebuilding year, we are a team still in transition.”
There are obviously bumps in the road and we will overcome them. Of course it’s frustrating to see our boys in blue struggle, but we have to support the team and our coach.

  16. Ryan

My president is black! F@ck all u hataz dat doubted us!
    WE DID IT!!!!
c you in da BLACK house!!!!!!!

  17. Squirms

I called it in preseason that Porter would be much maligned…

now two predictions for March Madness..

UK will be in the same bracket as Oklahoma

UL will be a 1 to the 2 Duke, or the 2 to the 1 of Duke

  18. DaMooseIsLoose

16- Is that why you voted for him?
don’t get me wrong i voted for him too but not because he’s black.
your glass is only half full in that dept. anyway, he’s sorta white too.
    C u inda blite house!!!

  19. bigbcurry

#17, I would like to see us matched up against Oklahoma, rather than any of the other big boys. That Patterson/Griffin matchup would be a classic.

  20. AlohaStateWildcat

I thought Bruce was channeling Dylan’s live act. As in the only song I even recognized was Glory Days. Best halftime shows were u2, Prince, and Tom Freakin’ Petty. Oh and that weird Indiana Jones thing they did in the early 90s. Oh and #10 sorry Pavement couldn’t do halftime for your listening pleasure.
I want Goldfrapp or Shakira sliding into that camera next year!

  21. chucknorrisstotalgym

Better than the Boss was Kirk Warner’s oldest daughter. She is freaking smoking!

  22. coachclyde

Hey Matt, too bad the game on Tuesday is on Raycom and not ESPN. Guess that means Edwards won’t be interviewing Gillespie at halftime.

  23. Your Daddy

Matt you said in this article that you “fully expect them to do that on Tuesday against a Mississippi State team that the Cats match up with much better than their last two opponents.” Come on dude, you act like we played Wakeforest and Pittsburgh the last two games NOT Ole Miss and the fake USC. Quit apologizing for the coach, he makes no adjustments and gets outcoached constantly.

  24. rbdono2

Glad to see Gillispie apologize. And Bruce Springsteen Tea Bagged America! We rewound that part at least a dozen times. Springsteens face was priceless, as if to say “Yeah America, that just happened!”

  25. BurnerTurner5

#16 Actually he ‘s light brown, kind of like the other Osama. What in the hell does that have to do with the Super Bowl or UK sports?

  26. Ratlifj

Matt, your liberal is showing (Bruce Springsteen’s performance was the most important event of the day) .Still you got the best website for UK sports, so I can deal.

  27. univky

Signing day is Wednesday not Tuesday. Very good chance the “silent ” verbal is DE Dequin Evans.

  28. Meeksismybabydaddy

    22. I was going to say the same thing, isn’t our game on Raycom tomorrow night not espn?

  29. JaredCarterIsMyHomeboy

Anyone want to join with me and start calling Gillispe/Liggins the Odd Couple?

  30. ukwildcatwildfan

Bob Knight to Georgia? It’s a possibility.

  31. matt s

You can’t really count out a Gillispie coached team but you still can’t count on a Gillispie coached team either. I hate to be a pessimist but this team will lose to any team that has faster guards (and they have so far this year). Same thing will happen next year since the only guard coming in is Villarino. There will still be Porter and Liggins and Galloway. Coach has no confidence in Galloway (who was brought in to be a point guard), Porter will always be slow, and Liggins is too eratic for this team.

  32. floorgeneral22

31 That isn’t true at all…..Bobby Maze and Cam Tatum are both very fast guards and we beat Tennessee. Auburn has nothing BUT fast guards and we won that game. Florida Atlantic was extremely fast. Alabama has the most athletic guard in the SEC in Senario Hillman, and Brock was definitely the fastest guy on the floor.

And I don’t know if you have seen him play, but Vilarino will be one of the fastest guards in the SEC next year. The kid is a waterbug. That is why BCG wants him. I thought it was hilarious how everyone is so down on him, but at open gym people kept saying “who is that kid? why aren’t we recruiting him?”

  33. coachclyde

#32, you’re only partly correct. Hood is technically a shooting guard.

  34. pji

Liggins has every right to be upset with BCG. In the first half he plays really well and gives us the lead at the buzzer. Then he makes one or two mistakes and sits the rest of the game. It makes no sense. Porter screws up constantly, but gets to come back in as soon as Liggins makes a couple mistakes. Porter is terrible. He can’t guard anyone, and can’t make a layup to save his pecker. Until we get the PG and SF positions figured out, we will be an average SEC team.

  35. toddp8

Hey 20. don’t forget about the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction.

  37. RememberTheMember

    32) THANK YOU. Vilarino will shut up a lot of smack talkers next year, I hope. I mean, COME ON… if he can dribble, pass, and hit a LAYUP, he’s already better than Porter.

SORRY, I like Porter, but the missed layup thing is just becoming ridiculous. Everytime he gets the ball on a break now I say “PASS IT! PASS IT! OH NOOOOO! #*@& YOU, PORTER!”

  38. RememberTheMember

And just for authenticity’s sake, I edited Porter’s layup rating on NCAA Basketball 2009 to 0. =)

  39. matt s

you’re right #37. He might as well pull up for a 3 if he’s by himself on that break. He’d get the same result.

  40. 96wildcat

My problem with Gillispie is Liggins did play well and he kept him out the rest of the game after that 3 point shot. They needed him in there and I believe keeping him out the whole time cost them that game. Take him out for a minute to prove your point and get his a$$ back in. Porter being in at the end of a close game is a big mistake.

    16 = racist

  41. IjustWantToWin

As pointed out earlier, the president is both black and white. I don’t see why that matters, but some ignorant people only think he is black. I don’t get you people

  42. toold

If Liggins played well in the first half why did he not enter the game in the second half until the 11 minute mark. BillyG has obvious trouble controlling his emotions and I think that is the reason his sub pattern is erratic. His lack of control will be his downfall at some point.

  43. NashvilleCats

I really hope Bobby Knight goes to UGA. That would guarantee them not being good for the next couple of years and we wouldn’t have to worry about another team getting better in the SEC East.

  44. 96wildcat

I agree 42. Just a guess, but I think he took awhile to put Liggins in because the team was playing pretty well and maybe he didn’t want to disrupt anything at that point. I personally didn’t even think Liggins shot was all that bad of an idea. He was wide open at least. I guess if he was shooting a higher percentage would help.

  45. matt s

Here’s the bottom line. Villarino better be pretty damn good. UK has one of the top 5 shooting guards in the nation and one of the top 5 big men in the nation. 40% of the starting lineup is in the top 5 in the nation at their positions and UK still has only beaten 1 decent team (in tennessee, maybe WVU). Goes to show you you have to have a good point guard. Gillispie better be able to get good guards.

  46. MCB

Go here and vote for KSR as one of the top blogs of 09. If he had just 50 votes that would put him in first place as of this momement!

  47. matt s

And it goes to show how bad our current point guard situation is when they have those two elite players and still have trouble winning.

  48. JoeBHall

BCG let’s his emotions take over. Obviously, look how he treated that reporter. If he’s pissed at you–you don’t play. If your quiet and say nothing (Harris & Porter) you start…

  49. the ghost of Bill Hicks

Did anyone else notice the crowd on the field in front of Springsteen? Nothing but balding, gray haired AARP members…looked like a lot of the people you see on TV at Rupp. Was Fleetwood Mac not available? It’s 2009 and we’re getting halftime entertainment that was cool in 1985….pathetic.

  51. wildeers

springsteen sucks…he has never been, nor will ever be in the “working class” so how can he be a working class hero?

  52. gorbe ye abi

This team is going to get used by teams that have above average PGs. Porter is not going to lead UK anywhere extraordinary. Liggins is too young and inexperienced.

Still suffering from the Tubby recruiting here.

  53. StitchJonesSays

You losers obviously know nothing about good music and talent. That beat box crap that is computer generated today takes no talent. Springsteen has sold more recoreds than most people and continues to do so. You should be so lucky as to see him live in concert. Get some taste and class ya jerks!

  54. Phili5

Springsteen is classic!! how can anyone not like glory days?

  55. RodStiffington

    50) Explain your purpose.

THE BOBBY KNIGHT CHATER IS GETTING VERY SERIOUS, IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. And by the way #43 I wouldn’t be flapping my gums about Knight, it may come back to bite you. He is still a hall of fame coach with as much knowledge about the game as anyone. It could be that all he needs is a new deal in a great conference like the SEC to get him going again. They whipped our ass last year with poor Felton, I wouldn’t be so quick to throw down the gauntlet.

  58. high and mighty

    49. who would YOU pick, if you had to pick the Super Bowl entertainment?

  59. Steve Jobs

Knight has forgotten more about coaching than the entirety of current SEC coaches currently knows!

  60. Joshua

I’m just one of those people that can’t stand Springsteen. Give me Metallica at half-time, or an under dressed Beyonce or something.

I’m still real salty after the loss AT HOME to the freakin’ Gamecocks. Embarassing. That’s two very unnecessary losses to teams that do not have the talent that we have.

If not for Jodie Meeks, our record in the SEC might be even worse.

I think it’s great to be an optimistic, sunny side up fan, but where do you draw the line with repeated seasons of losing to the VMI’s of the world, and not holding home court at Rupp? I’m NOT a BCG fan by any means, but he should be giving more of a return to the fanbase than what he is delivering. No, he’s not on the cort, but he is the ??leader?? out there, and like the kid said in the movie Remember the Titans…”attitude reflects leadership” and right now I would say our poor effort and lack of determination on the court may be a reflection of poor leadership.

Wait til Daniel Orton…wait til John Hood. Yeah, they will be great, but what have you done for me lately BCG? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?

  61. goukcatsgo

I disagree matt. South Carolina is not an “inferior team” this year in the sec. They are likely a top 4 or 5 team in the conference and would be in the tournamnet if it started today.

  62. the ghost of Bill Hicks

Foo Fighters would’ve been epic for the Super Bowl.

  63. bigjas

#60…Now Metallica would be an awesome halftime show.

Not that I had a problem with Bruce Springsteen, The E Street Band, and the Max Weinberg 7 at halftime.

  64. payne

61- Absolutely. If the tourney started today there would be 3 SEC teams in: Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina. With an RPI of 66 the Cats would be sweating it for a spot.

  65. sunnycat

16 hey dumbass he is only like 1/8 black, and he actually wears his pants around his waste.
