So lets say you were a random person who isnt a true follower of today’s music “scene” (like oh, say me) and you found yourself watching the Grammys tonight and live blogging (and if you havent read it, scroll down and do so). What would you have found out? Well you would have learned that….U2 has a new song which is awful….any ensemble with Justin Timberlake, Al Green, Keith Urban and Boyz II Men is destined to be bad…..Stevie Wonder must be blind because he would have never been playing with the Jonas Brothers if he could see them….Miley Cyrus is no Taylor Swift….Neil Diamond still rules…..Adele looks like a fatter Osborne daughter….when you see how Jason Mraz dresses, it is hard to defend liking his song…..and it isnt a good sign if you are watching an “Historic Hip-Hop Summit” and you ask your friends, “whose the pregnant lady?” But none of that was quite as fascinating as the fact that Morgan Freeman claimed to be a “dear friend” of Kenny Chesney. Now how in the world did that happen? Where would Morgan Freeman have been where he could have seen Kenny Chesney and they could have formed a deep bond. Since all I know about Morgan Freeman is that he chases Ashley Judd in most of her movies, I cant imagine when he would have had time to become friends with Peyton Manning’s favorite singer. But alas, it must have happened. And oh yeah, they dont actually give away any “awards” on the Grammys anymore. But hey whatcha gonna do……
To the news……
(1): This was one of the strangest weekends I can ever remember during a college basketball season. Because the Cats had the weekend off, there was virtually no news to come out of Lexington in any form. The Cats practiced during the break and had what one individual told me was a “monumental set of film sessions.” Over the next two days, we will get into what is at stake against the Gators on Tuesday, but the games of this week had a mixed result for the Cats. Mississippi State defeated Arkansas, but Tennessee dropped a game to Auburn, thus still putting the SEC East crown in Kentucky’s grasp if they are able to grab it.
(2): As we wrote about earlier on Sunday, the chatter about UK’s interest in Darius Smith continues to increase. The combo guard from Chicago has been visited a couple of different times by UK coaches and lists Kentucky towards the top of his list, along with Indiana, Arizona and Wisconsin. We described Smith’s game on Sunday but what will be interesting to follow is whether his recruitment tells us about how the roster will be composed next year. With only one player certainly gone (Jared Carter), and at least three coming in, there will certainly be some rearranging of the chairs in Lexington. Lots of questions will be raised, including the status of Donald Williams, the future of AJ Stewart/Kevin Galloway and the pro prospects of Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson. Either way, the active recruitment of Smith (and for that matter John Wall) shows everyone that there will be extensive turnover on the UK roster next season….it just remains to be seen from where.
(3): To show you just how little news is out there, we give you the story that this weekend, the Cats’ took their team photo. See I told you there wasnt much there. Interestingly however, the Cats have only started taking the photo this late in the year since Gillispie came to UK. It used to be a preseason picture (which is why if you look at the official team photos you occasionally see players that make you go, who?) but now is taken late in the year. Here it is:
(4): Finally, Chip Cosby had an interesting 2010 recruiting note in his UK football column in which he spoke with Louisville Central’s coach, who told him that Stephan Robinson, Rob Gidel’s 5th ranked player in the Class of 2010 will likely commit to Kentucky if he is offered. The WR/CB is likely to receive an offer fairly soon from the Cats and at 5’9″, likely projects as a member of the defensive backfield for the Cats in the future. He would continue the UK-Central pipeline (one of the big losses that Louisville has suffered in its home city) and is yet another part of the movement to get Tim Patterson, the #1 ranked player from Kentucky and likely the best recruit from the state since Micah Johnson. The football staff continues to get it done.
More all day, including the first post from the newest Kentucky Sports Radio Contributor (you will find out more later), the beginning of the Florida previews and news as it breaks from Gillispie’s press conference. Stay tuned……..

Got a question, what happened to the hoopla about BCG signing his contract? Has this ever happened or has he been coaching at UK for two seasons now without a contract? I mean I know this is something that has probably been tried to be pushed under the carpet, but just wondering what ever happened of it?
February 8th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Tim Patterson, not Jefferson.
February 8th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Matt, have you heard of Aaron Watts from McCreary Central??? He is the closest thing to Jodie Meeks that I’ve yet to see in our fine state of Ky. He’s a Junior (Class of 2010). Go to http://www.myspace.com/kyhoops and click on VIDEOS. The kid is as pure a shooter as they come. Do you know if UK is after him?
February 8th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Stand tall Jared, stand tall my friend.
February 8th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Who the hell is #2 & 11?
February 8th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Patrick looks like a legit 6’9″ in that picture.
February 8th, 2009 at 11:37 pm
LMAO, who IS #2 and 11. I’ve never once seen them.
February 8th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Is that Adam Williams back wearing #11?
February 8th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
MATT….Too bad I can’t post to the site….how about a random post about the results you get when you look up Matt Jones on Youtube……………….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&feature=dir
Turkey Hunter…Help a brother out! I know you are still up staring at your Appolonia poster from Purple Rain.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:13 am
Did Porter not get the memo “Bring Your Blue Shoes for the picture today”?
I know layups are tough but… BLUE SHOES, MOE!!!
Is that Adam Delph (sp?) with his head cocked “about to get sick of sitting pine Dusty Mills style”? Is he incubating a slow snap temper tantrum and just waiting for the right moment to start random fights in the UK cafeteria? Jared Carter’s got his back yo.
That tilt is ticking time bomb people. I know these things.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:13 am
2 is Matt Scherbenske (walk on, injured) and 11 is Adam Delph, walk on from Louisville. Seems like he has been in sweats during SEC play.
Whats the deal with posters of every current player all over the practice gym? I can’t see what that could possibly help with, not even recruiting. I wouldn’t want my picture up where only the team practices and nobody else really ever sees.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:22 am
Patterson is taller than Jorts and Harrellson is listed at 6’10” and last yr Pat was listed at 6’8.” Something fishy here.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:23 am
Maybe Porter should change his number… #13? My god.
Never really paid attention to it since I intentionally avoid watching him when the ball’s in his hands. I don’t want to see, no joke.
I know some people who like the number 13. Obviously because they want to be different. The one number that a society says is bad luck Porter takes as good luck. Maybe it’s his birthdate, who knows.
I don’t think you want to mess with luck Michael. But being that your messing with everything else I guess that we have to remember why #13 really sucks.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:26 am
I hope we do get those guys from Central, that will only help with recruiting. UK football is about to be top 25 and stayin that way. It is awesome to see. Because even though people have their doubts on our bball team, I think we are gonna whoop Florida and I see us winning out the SEC…is that too much to hope for? Especially when you are a die hard fan that hopes for the best. UK is gonna be super good IMO next year because Meeks and Patterson will be back. I’ve said it all along that Patterson will be back and I’m stickin to what I say. UK will be top 10, 5 next year. It’s an awesome time to be a UK sports fan because all the athletic teams are startin to make their presence felt. You may think I’m dumb, but I thinkin long term and I think/hope I am right. Let’s stay optimistic.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:32 am
that has to be the worst balance I have ever seen in a team picture. Putting most of the bigger, taller post players on the right side of the picture and putting the tall but lanky perimeter players on the left. Who ever was in charge of that should be fired.
February 9th, 2009 at 12:37 am
It looks like they tried to balance it with white and black players more than anything else.
“Yea, uh… let me get the next tallest cracker to stand next to this one”
February 9th, 2009 at 12:44 am
Clearly BCG was waiting for Harris to change his numbr to 5, before they took the team photo (lol).
February 9th, 2009 at 12:44 am
Speaking of… Does anyone else find it odd that Harris is paying respect NOW to a guy that obviously didnt get along with coach? Isn’t that a slap in BCG’s face a lil bit?
February 9th, 2009 at 12:50 am
18- he’s not paying respect to Jasper,he has 5 siblings or something like that
February 9th, 2009 at 1:09 am
#16- Ha! I actually laughed out loud when I read that.
February 9th, 2009 at 1:21 am
Who is the hispanic guy that is #30?
February 9th, 2009 at 1:22 am
Yeah I dont get Ramon keeps changing his number…it doesnt make him shoot or dribble the ball any better. I swear I could do better. Oh wait, I know I could. Hell when I played ball I averaged more assists than points anyway…it cant be that difficult. But yeah its funny, 4 black dudes per white dude on the back row lol. It is a funny lookin team pic, mainly cuz Carter is so much taller than everyone else…but he will be gone soon. Free scholly…yay!
February 9th, 2009 at 1:23 am
Uhhh… #2, who the hell are you and why are you in The University of Kentucky Boys Basketball picture?
Come on, if Porter airballs layups and starts then this guy has to be the guard equivalent of Mark Coury. Let me guess, he’s going to be very very very very very good. He’s got everything a guard could want and he’s working on his shot.
February 9th, 2009 at 1:27 am
12, Patterson isnt taller than Harrellson…look again…I think Harrellson is 6’9 and Patterson is 6’8 1/2
February 9th, 2009 at 1:47 am
So I’m on here really late and I’m surprised that no one mentioned that two UK recruits played each other tonight. It was Newton vs Ferguson and I think Ferguspn’s team ended up coming out on top. Highlights included Ferguson swatting a Newton layup and Newton putting Ferguson on his back on a block attempt. Good stuff
February 9th, 2009 at 2:52 am
Dear God: Please, please, please let the newest KSR contributor be Tyler Thompson.
February 9th, 2009 at 4:23 am
That is real unfortunate placing for Patterson in that picture. That black square on the wall behind him makes it look, at first glance, like he is balding with a widow’s peak with an an old school Clyde Drexler (or maybe even Sherman Helmsely) ‘doo. Did they actually hire a professional photographer for this or just give a camera to anybody hanging around the facility?
February 9th, 2009 at 5:28 am
The lines about Morgan Freeman and Stevie Wonder at the Grammy’s was the funniest thing I have read in a long time.
February 9th, 2009 at 6:49 am
28, you must be easily amused.
Matt, how does the number of live blogger benefit you other than just “bragging rights”? You seem to have more than just a passing interest in how many people are logged in.
That’s an awful picture. You would think they could have a professional looking picture made, not one that looks like the middle school team with some flood lights pointed at them.
February 9th, 2009 at 7:18 am
I could be wrong but didn’t the CATS start this 3 game skid since they stopped wearing the blue socks and shoes. I could be wrong but my girl and I talked about it when we saw this picture. I could be wrong just thought it was interesting
February 9th, 2009 at 7:20 am
matt, you forgot the most important part of the grammy’s
February 9th, 2009 at 7:22 am
Oh and by the way Matt, what are the odds of a hate florida day tomorrow? I think we need one for our boys. I think everyone remembers what happened last time you guys did one.
February 9th, 2009 at 7:23 am
29 must be a fan of the jonas brothers and hanah montana.
February 9th, 2009 at 7:44 am
Can we please have Florida hate day tomorrow? Nothing would make my Tuesday any better!
February 9th, 2009 at 7:48 am
all of those players and only 2 scorers?
February 9th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Also, Ramon needs to change his number back, ever since he became #5 we are 0-3
February 9th, 2009 at 7:52 am
#32 – Well said… Well said indeed. WE definitely need a Florida hate day. I freakin’ can’t stand Calathes. I think that he is the SEC’s version of Hansbrough. I think BCG will have our boys ready. We will have a big game from Pat & Miller, Meeks will drop 22. Liggins will have to get some offense initiated via fastbreaks. GO CATS!!!
February 9th, 2009 at 8:03 am
Trud dat Meeks’ baby mama. Totally agree with you said 37. This week off couldn’t have happened at a better time in my opinion. We WILL BE READY.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Sorry Meeks’ baby mama meant to say true dat. It’s early
February 9th, 2009 at 8:12 am
We need a hate Florida day! Calathes needs to be destroyed. I predicted 3-4 SEC losses, so now is the time to get back on track and let’s kick UF’s ass! Please BCG, use a different line-up, show some flexibility for once!!!
February 9th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I don’t know how many people caught the Billy Gillispie show last night but he pretty much said he wasn’t going to make any changes.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Have not heard much about Galloway transfering. I don’t understand his role. and I do not think he does either. He was a point in junior college. He only scored about 11 per game from what I recall on a team that averaged a 100( These numbers are from memory). He can not score enough to play the two or three but gets no chance, in games, to play the point. Did BILLYG miss something when looking at this kid last year? I would think with him running the point, if Porter has to play slide him over to the two and move Meeks to the three. At least we should be able to handle the ball a little better and Porter might return to his 3 point % from previous years. All this goes out the window if Galloway is unsure of the offensive patterns. Many on this and other sights comment that there are not many patterns. What to you think. Harris has no offensive skills other than a dunk off break or someone feeding him when he cuts due to his man doubling the post.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:50 am
What’s the stats on Darius Smith? Is he a big-time scorer? That is what we will need if Meeks and/or Patterson leave. Hood and Orton will be great but neither of them will be a big time scorer next season.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:53 am
#32 Everday is a Hate Florida Day in my house. Get your drift though. Yep, Clydes show pretty much confirmed that you’ll see the same 5 hit the floor.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:53 am
42, I disagree, I think Orton will be a double digit scorer from the moment he hits the floor.
February 9th, 2009 at 8:56 am
I thought Orton was a defensive monster who gets all his points on putbacks on offensive boards. Am I wrong? I also forgot about Pilgrim, he should put up about 14 points a game next year.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Why would you not start Miller over Harris at this point? Harris’ only value is as an on-ball man-to-man defender; Miller is a better off ball defender, which is shown by his blocks. If the other team doesn’t have a Jodie Meeks’ type offensive weapon, then why waste a position on a lockdown defender that you don’t need? Florida doesn’t have a guy like that. So why not let Miller play from the beginning in hopes that he gets hot and takes some pressure off Patterson and Meeks to get them into the game early? When Harris starts, he just turns it over or takes a bad shot the first 2 or 3 possessions and we basically start the game down 4-5 points.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:06 am
47)I agree. I like Harris but he is never going to get better as a ball handler while Miller has the chance to improve in all areas. Let him learn on the court.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Morgan Freeman friends with Nicole Kidman married to Keith Urban. There is your link.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am
49-He said Kenny Chesney, not Keith Urban
February 9th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Isn’t Morgan Freeman God? I believe he knows everyone.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Beisner is going to be pissed that it isn’t Blink 182′s Monday News and Views
February 9th, 2009 at 9:24 am
48.) dont get too excited he only averaged 11 at Hampton, not to mention he was a horrible free throw shooter. We both know that without freethrows, we be a 10 loss team right now.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:25 am
50.) Morgan Freeman friends with Nicole Kidman, married to Keith Urban, friends with Kenny Chesney…..Theres your link lol…
February 9th, 2009 at 9:26 am
53- yeah I am worried we are overhyping him too. he dominated at Midnight Madness, but so did Morkinyo 2 years ago. I remember watching him post up and score on Pat probably 3 straight times down the floor. And Morakinyo was absolutely awful whenever he saw the floor in the regular season.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:28 am
53)I know, but the stories from preseason about Pilgrim get my hopes up. Then again, in preseason we were hearing what a monster season that Harris was going to have.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Guys, guys, guys. Everyone knows that the only reason Pilgrim didn’t dominate at Hampton was because he had a bad work ethic and wouldn’t listen to anyone. Obviously, if a guy like that comes to Kentucky, he’ll get his head on straight and be a force to be reckoned with. Just look at Alex Legion, AJ Steward and DeAndre Liggins…
February 9th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Who’s this kid? We’ve offered him too, Chase Budinger? haha http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=84218&Sport=2
February 9th, 2009 at 9:32 am
58- I would love to get that guy. Isn’t Bradenton where the old Lexington Catholic coach is at now? Maybe he could hook us up.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
better than getting Tubby’s sloppy 2nds.
February 9th, 2009 at 9:49 am
59.) Haney went to North Broward, and quit the job……
February 9th, 2009 at 9:50 am
61- My bad, do you know where he is now?
February 9th, 2009 at 10:05 am
They were waiting to take this picture until after Ramon Harris settled on a jersey number.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:06 am
[...] Jones has a little news, but not very [...]
February 9th, 2009 at 10:09 am
52, no kidding. Not even a passing mention in the paragraph either…..weak.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Be aware of players that no other major programs are after. Every once in a while you get a diamond in the rough, but thats the exception, not the rule.
February 9th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I agree that Harris need to change back to #22 he played better and our record was better.
And 66) it matters what your intentions as a coach are…. recruit 2 to 3 “Star” players and surround them with role players…..or recruit “Star” players and try to teach them roles.
February 9th, 2009 at 11:17 am
sorry looking bunch
February 9th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Who has the most players on an NCAA basketball squad? I count 19 for UK, that’s GOT to be up there.
