Just a few days after getting a commitment from Renardo Sidney, MSU is doing it again….this time getting a commitment from John Riek. Riek was once recruited by Kentucky and at one time was considered a potential NBA lottery pick. We shall see if he reaches that potential down in Starkville.

I thought he was redshirting at Cincinatti…Sidney, Varnado, and Riek could block a ton of shots.

SEC needs good recruiting classes.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
probly uncordinated as heck too
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:35 pm
That dude is a load. Just wonder if he’s quick? Alleyne could probably do that pose as well, but we all know how good he was.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
People wont be talking about how much the SEC sucks next year
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Safari was half-the weight of that man!
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Are those jorts he is wearing?
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

May 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
His legs kind of look abnormally skinny
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
I saw this guy on the news riding in the back of a Toyota pickup truck, holding an AK-47.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
never qualified for UC i don’t belive
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Not to throw stones in glass houses, but how is MSU getting in and landing some of these recruits? I can’t think of a harder place other than may Auburn to recruit in the SEC than Starkville. That would give them a top 10 class easy.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
He makes quite the target.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
14-LOL…not too sure, kinda reminds me of a taller version of the guy that was Maximus’s friend in Gladiator.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
14) That’s sooo wrong, freakin hilarious but wrong.
Anybody got any insight on Bledsoe? Did he have a good time here? What did he see? Who did he hang out with? Anything???
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
I think that is the guy from “The Air Up There” the movie with Kevin Bacon. LOL
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
I bet those shorts he has on are actually a pair of 28″ x 36″ Levi’s jeans.
May 3rd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
16- Their no where close to a top 10 class…Sidney is #16 in 2009 now…and the other two players they signed are unranked.
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
5 bucks says he can dunk
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 pm
State has nothing except youth on their side. If Vanardo stays in the draft they will only have two seniors, and I couldn’t say if there is much court time experience between them. They haven’t been any good since ‘96, and thats the only time I can ever remember they were a factor.
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
The classic Beas Hamga goal holding shot. But Beas had a cast in his.
23) $5 says he can’t…on a 20-foot goal.
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:13 pm
I think it’s great. I hope he is awesome there. When UK is great, the league is better. UK will start to set a higher standard, and so will the SEC. I’ll be glad when people don’t have a reason to bash SEC hoops.
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Slow new day much? Good lord could I get some recruiting news on a lazy sunday? I know John Wall has got to have added Bob Jones University or Campbell to his list by now. Bledsoe has to have popped up somewhere in Lexington with Razor Ramon and Dwight Perry. I’m dying here Matt!
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:25 pm
great news. the sec is going to be tough again next year. this will help us when we put the beat down on everyone.
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
That’s probably as high as he can get
May 3rd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
He’s no Beas Hamga.

From the Memphis Roar blog –
Bledsoe Update
According to our sources, Eric Bledsoe’s visit with Memphis went very well. Eric left sometime mid-afternoon on Saturday to fly to Lexington for his visit to the University of Kentucky, which will last until Monday. Bledsoe will then return to Birmingham, Alabama, where he will then make a decision sometime later this week. According to sources, Bledsoe toured the FedEx Forum and the University of Memphis’ campus on Friday.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:31 pm
Matt, do you have anything on Bledsoe?
Anything???? Anything at all??????
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:33 pm
At least something to entertain us, otherwise write some more articles on Rick Stansbury and the great Mississippi State Fightin’ Bulldogs.

Direct from Amazon — I hope you read this John Wall.
The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team
by Mike Krzyzewski
1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing novel, April 14, 2009
By Jah-knee - See all my reviews
I purchased this book thinking that a coach with his résumé would have something novel to say about teamwork or success. Unfortunately, this book is full of fluffy stories and very basic examples of team dynamics and the factors that make up high achieving teams. If you are perusing this type of information, you will likely already have most of the skills he writes about. It reads like a self congratulatory dissertation than a book providing novel ideas about leadership. Skip it.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Since Bledsoe is still in town — I wouldn’t expect anything till probably Tuesday.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
What’s not to like about Stansbury. He seems like a great guy and I would love to seem them come in 2nd in the SEC.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
OT: I read Matt say a week or so ago about a recruits nasty dunk of Xavier Henry but I cannot for the life of me remember who the recruit was. I was thinking Joe Jackson but I can’t find a video of that on youtube using jackson’s name so I figured I had the wrong player.
Anyone remember?
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
meant to say “recruit’s nasty dunk ON Xavier Henry”
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Can anyone make me understand why ESPN still has the “cookin with beano” video on Kentucky’s home clubhouse page. The video not only is ignorant but it has been posted on there for way too long. I find it hard to believe that there hasn’t been some type of positive calipari news or video that has taken place that ESPN could post. This old fart on there makes me sick! He needs to retire and not be so bitter.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
According to Jerry Meyers latest article, John Wall will narrow list next week after school is out. Jerry says Kentucky and Duke are in the best position, with Florida and Miami trailing.
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
John Riek = Shagari Alleyne = A Tall Freak! IF he were any good would he not be decalring for the NBA?
May 3rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm
nevermind, I figured it out. It wasn’t a current recruit, it was Willie Warren. AND WHAT A NASTY DUNK IT WAS!!!
May 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
I love the fact that Mississippi St is getting Sidney and Riek(I hope Riek can play).I want the best in the SEC. The ones we dont get let em go to the other SEC schools. We will still beat em lol,and we wont have to listen to everybody say how bad our leauge is.
May 3rd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Had a link from ASOB about Stewart missing a team session (along with the others that wont be back next year)

This is great, I hope the SEC is great next year. Kentucky, Miss State, and Florida will be loaded…I love it when a Kentucky Boy in Rick can have good teams at Miss St.
May 3rd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I know alot of you want believe this but I work with Tom Stansbury’s brother and have for 15 years in Indiana.. Of course we talk about basketball alot at work he knows i am a huge UK fan. He said that his brother is sort of burnt out at MSU and he says recruiting is he hardest thing about his job. He said his brother would have crawled to Lexington for the Kentucky job however… His brother Tom has told me that his brother and the other coaches thought that Tubby did not relate good to the recruits and that Billy Clyde was a great coach and recruiter but if he was around for long that people would start seeing that he could be an ass… turns out he was correct.. I always of course root for MSU except when they are playing KY.

Another Wall story, just ’cause you’re bored…..
Wall’s recruiting saga misunderstood by the masses
By Tim Stevens
McClatchy Newspapers
The saga of John Wall’s college recruitment seems to be winding down, though it may look like there is no end in sight.
The 6-foot-4 Raleigh Word of God point guard still has eight schools on his list — including Kentucky — and he says there is no favorite, no leader.
But when talking with him, he seems to be getting very close to deciding where he will go to school next year.
There has never been a recruiting story like this one.
Great players make college decisions every year, but few players have the explosiveness and the charisma of Wall.
Wall is so talented that college fans easily project him as leading their team to national prominence, even a national championship.
Wall might have the ability to lead Kentucky, Kansas, Florida or Duke to a national title next year.
He possibly could lead Baylor or Miami to national prominence. He could keep Memphis in the national dialogue.
He would sell lots of tickets and enter the program as a hometown hero at N.C. State.
That projected impact on some of the best programs in the country has made him special. At least two North Carolina talk shows have done segments discussing which story is bigger — John Wall or the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL playoffs.
Imagine comparing a professional for-profit organization that has radio shows, television coverage, a public relations department and millionaire players, with the 19-year-old guy down the street.
The attention baffles Wall.
“I’m just a kid,” he says.
His recruiting process has been filled with twists and rumors, most of which he has no control over and some of which have been mean-spirited and cruel.
Here’s a few rumors and Wall’s response:
After Baylor created a coaching position for Dwon Clifton, Wall’s club team coach, many assumed Wall was ticketed to Baylor.
“I’m wide open,” Wall said at the time. “Dwon and I never had that type of agreement.”
Wall contemplated playing in Europe rather than go to college.
“No way, absolutely not. Where did that come from?” he said.
Wall is a “one and done” player, someone who would play one year of college basketball and go to the NBA.
“I never said that,” Wall countered.
One Web site had him down to North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky and Florida.
“I haven’t given anybody a list of leaders,” Wall said.
And North Carolina had not offered him and was not recruiting him as of last Thursday.
For 24 hours, it was a foregone conclusion that Wall was going to enter the draft this year. He was projected as a top-10 pick.
“I don’t think I’m ready to play in the NBA right now, and I want the college experience,” he said. “Going to college would be good for me.”
Wall failed a grade and bounced around from school to school.
No, he never failed a grade. He did go to three high schools. He went to Garner High in Garner, N.C. His family moved into the Broughton district in Raleigh and he went to Broughton for less than a semester before transferring to Word of God.
Wall is delaying his decision because he enjoys the attention.
I don’t think so.
I doubt he has ever made an unsolicited call to a reporter. He has never sought publicity to my knowledge. He is confident, but not conceited.
He is like many high school seniors and is struggling with his college decision. He has more options than most students and probably has a lot more at stake.
His decision-making process has been slowed by coaching changes, late recruiting offers and his mother’s illness. She is recovering from an aneurysm.
John Wall has been misjudged by a lot of people who wish he would get on their timetable and make his decision.
He has been polite to me and, as far as I know, honest.
During our interviews, he consistently says, “Yes, sir,” or “No, sir.”
He has spoken several times about being a teenager who has to make a big decision, a decision that he wishes he felt more confident about.
Last fall, Word of God Coach Levi Beckwith said to understand Wall you need to know that he wants to make people happy. He doesn’t want to disappoint.
Before Wall began taking official visits, Beckwith asked Wall to promise to not commit while on a recruiting trip. “John would commit every place he visits if he is not careful,” Beckwith said at the time. “He wants to make that coach happy; he doesn’t want to disappoint him.”
Pretty soon, though, Wall will disappoint a lot of college basketball fans when their choice for him doesn’t match his.
That’s unavoidable, and that day is coming.

Slowest…..day….ever?

Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com has Kentucky ranked third in his early preseason rankings. He is going on the assumption that John Wall is going to be a Kentucky Wildcat. Here is what Goodman says about the Wildcats:
3. KENTUCKY
Record: 22-14 (NIT)
Losses: Jared Carter
Probable Early-Entry Departures: Patrick Patterson
Potential Early-Entry Departures: Jodie Meeks
Key Returnees: Jodie Meeks, Darius Miller, DeAndre Liggins, Ramon Harris, Perry Stevenson, Kevin Galloway, Josh Harrellson, Matt Pilgrim
Newcomers: DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, Jon Hood, John Wall (potentially)
First of all, this ranking is under the assumption that Wall, the nation’s top unsigned player and also the elite point guard in the country, chooses to play in Lexington. New coach John Calipari’s team still has a few key question marks right now. Will Patterson and Meeks be back? Even if Patterson leaves, Kentucky still has a pair of talented freshman big men in Cousins and Orton so, basically, Calipari can afford to take that hit. What he can’t afford is to lose Meeks. The Wildcats also have quality wings with Miller and Liggins.
Here are the complete rankings:
1. Kansas
2. Michigan State
3. Kentucky
4. North Carolina
5. Villanova
6. Washington
7. Purdue
8. Texas
9. Duke
10. Clemson
11-25. Xavier, Butler, UCONN, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee, Siena, California, Texas A&M, UCLA
Goodman has Louisville listed in the “Ten more to watch” category.

All eyes in the Kentucky recruiting world are focused on the actions of both John Wall and Eric Bledsoe.
It looks as though you can give your ‘Refresh’ key a rest. At least for tonight.
I spoke with both Birmingham (Ala.) Parker head coach and Birmingham Ice AAU coach Ava Herndon Sunday night, both of which said that they hadn’t spoken with Bledsoe, who apparently is still on campus in Lexington and will not return to Birmingham until tomorrow.
Bledsoe visited Memphis prior to his weekend visit to UK.
A slow news weekend just got a little slower.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
is he eligible for next yr?

Hopefully someone took him to Tolly-Ho so he could get a true sense of the University.
