[Moderated by Matt Jones]

I dare you to step to my crew and our monitors.
Doug Gottlieb appears to be a bit of a douche. But, he’s a douche with a very respectable and very public position in the media. Thus, his emphatic dismissal of UK’s chances with John Wall is newsworthy. Is he right? Who knows? Others might disagree, but here is everything he had to say about UK today:
Chris (Lexington): I’d bet my salary its KU vs. UK in the National Championship game next year. Any thoughts?
Doug Gottlieb: I’ll take that bet. The kid Kentucky got today is a good point guard and it makes them a tournament team, but Bledsoe’s not John Wall. We don’t know if Patterson’s coming back or if Meeks is coming back. If they both come back, they’ll have a chance. You have to remember Kentucky didn’t make the tourney last year. That’s a very big leap.
Spencer (Owensboro KY): With Bledsoe heading to UK, does this necessarily mean that Wall goes elsewhere (Duke, Miami)? Hard to imagine two big-time PGs going to the same school at the same time.
Doug Gottlieb: Yes. If you take a top ten point guard, and there’s another one out there, it means they weren’t willing to wait on Wall or he told them he wasn’t coming. Good for Kentucky because Bledsoe’s not a 1 and done. They’ll probably get more out of him than Wall and they won’t have to deal with the circus and the waiting. Makes a better argument for Patterson or Meeks to come back.
Brad (Sandusky, OH): Doug, should John Wall still consider Kentucky now that they have a solid PG in Eric Bledsoe?
Doug Gottlieb: Listen, if Kentucky takes Bledsoe which they have, they are not getting wall. Period. End of story. That’s how it works. It doesn’t mean that Bledsoe is better than Wall or that Wall is scared of Bledsoe. But if you are in the running for the top point guard in the country and you take another top ten point guard, it’s an obvious sign that Wall is not coming. Period.

Hi, my name is Doug Douchebag and I don’t know anything about anything. I am the world’s biggest idiot
May 6th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
He forgot to say “Done Deal”.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Just his opinion, could it be possible that coach Cal decided to pick up bledsoe so that IF we do get Wall and hes gone after a year we still have a damn good point guard on the team that has had a year to develop and become an even better player than before.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Doug Gottlieb should tell Cousins that Orton has already signed… errr, wait. Does that theory work for the center position?
May 6th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
all he is doing is giving his opinion and knows nothing about Wall’s decision making process. I think the only person who knows Wall’s decision making process is himself and only himself. Everyone else out there offering their opinions on the topic is just that, opinions.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
good point there, #4
May 6th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Just Gottlieb being Gottlieb. He may end up being correct, but this is just what he does. Poor man’s Charles Barkley covering college hoops. Emphasis on POOR.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
4) thats funny
i myself will take this with an ounce of credibility. i highly doubt he has much contact with wall, if any.

May 6th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Silly Doug
May 6th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
When was the last time two top-ten high-school point guards signed with the same college? Has it happened before?
Gottlieb doesn’t have any inside information on this, he is just playing the averages.
I say there is an exception to every rule, John Wall to Kentucky!
May 6th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Brandon (KY): Do you see Calipari still trying to get Wall even though he signed Bledsoe, or is he done recruiting for the 2009 class?
SportsNation Reggie Rankin: Brandon, I definitely don’t think Calipari has completed his ‘09 class and would certainly not turn down a commitment from Wall.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Does anyone ever recall this guy being right? I worry not about what he says.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Listen folks! This is Mr. Gottlieb who I have followed along ESPN year-in and year-out. He tends to be a bit innacurate with stories. I’m not saying this doesn’t hurt Wall’s chances, but it certainly doesn’t eliminate them. Cal just recruits this way. We need a PG and he goes after MULTIPLE stellar PG’s. Wall knows he’ll start anywhere he goes and get the minutes he wants anywhere he goes. But Cal produces the NBA PG’s and the system should be called the John Wall motion instead of the dribble drive motion and thats just it. Wall may still come here but like EVERY OTHER SCHOOL, WHO THE HELL KNOWS? WE WILL HAFT TO WAIT UNTIL MAT 20TH REGARDLESS. MY B-DAY IS MAY 21ST, SO MAYBE WALL CAN BE AN EARLY B-DAY PRESENT, EH? Bledsoe will be fine and he’s a good kid. I love his game and people, this is a top three PG wether his name isn’t John Wall or not. He’s not arguable the number 2 or 3 PG in the nation for no reason. Hes a helluva ball player and really will lay some damage. Be proud we landed him and consider Wall a luxurious dream that might not be so far away.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Doug is a Douche anyways…how can someone that looks like a geek get that much respect?..i mean geeez….only thing Doug’s got going for him is the world’s Largest Nose award….i mean seriously check out that snooter on that jack….lordy….

*top
May 6th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
This is his opinion (and we know how valuable that is), this isn’t any inside info he has. I hate Doug Gotlieb. He’s a worthless frigging douche.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
were gonna get wall, and brandon knight next year so suck it Doug
May 6th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Silly silly people that think isn’t going to wear UK blue
May 6th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Gottlieb is usually pretty fair with his talk about UK…
He applauded the hire of Calipari as a home run and said that it was a match made in heaven.
Like previous folks have already said, he’s just playing the averages here.
If Roy doesn’t call up Wall, he’s going to either Miami or UK — hopefully he’s a future Wildcat.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
I still believe we get Wall.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
to be honest, Wall is great, don’t get me wrong, but at least now we have a solid pg for next year no matter what
May 6th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
John Wall is comming to Kentucky
May 6th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
what’s this “Cal told me I was going to be his starting point guard business”?????? Surely Cal wouldn’t say that this early especially with Wall still in the mix…..
May 6th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Duh there is no reason to go to Miami people… Get real its Puke or Kentucky
May 6th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Doug you definitely shouldn’t steal someone’s credit card and then proceed to use it all over town. Period.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

30) i think the same thing. i was VERY relieved to get bledsoe. my worry was that we would get neither (guess I should stop getting used to being let down)…and dont get me wrong…i would love….LOVE…L-O-V-E LOVE for John Wall to come…but you know, even if he doesnt, we’re still very likely to have the best recruiting class in the NATION this year. we’re going to be FINE either way. Cal will develop bledsoe if wall doesnt come and well be right where we need to be.
if wall doesnt choose KY i just hope he doesnt choose florida.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
John Wall is coming to KY. It has already been decided. Dont listen to this moron. He has been wrong more times about all things UK than anybody else. Wall is going to be in UK blue next year, and I will even go ahead and let you in on a little bigger secret. Wall is going to announce withina week. (By next wednesday)
I have been telling you this for a while, but everybody wants to keep worrying. I am telling you that this is not a prediction it is a statement of fact. Wall will be at UK next year.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Dougie is wrong about this one. Wall may go elsewhere but it will not be because of Bledsoe.
If I am Cal, I am spinning this thing like this:
To Wall: We both know you are better than Bledsoe but the kid is a three to four year player. You told me you wanted to get to the NBA as fast as possible and be prepared. I don’t know if you have seen what was on this team but what good would it have done to have no one push in practice? You need more than game experience to be the best you can be. You would not have been as prepared if I did not bring in a “good” guard. This helps us get you where you want to be.
To Bledsoe: I helped Rose get where he wanted. I will help Wall get where he wants and I will help you as well. You are not quite there yet but it will be great for you to learn from Wall and see what all he has to go through. Once he leaves, you will be the man and on your way to the next level. Wall will push you in practice and show you what we need to work on in order to make you a lotter pick. Regardless of where you go, you will be in college at least two years, probably three and maybe four but the choice is yours. Come join us and grow into a lottery pick.
It is not hard to believe that both could end up at UK. Why? Because Cal is that good.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Most of you are just plain ignorant…you wonder why the whole country hates UK fans
May 6th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

40 do u think wall will come?
May 6th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Florida signed two top-10 point guards in one class in 07 when they got Calathes and Lucas in the same class. And that was with Walter Hodge (who played PG in spot duty the year before) coming back. Elite players aren’t worried about other prospects taking their spot they want the competition.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Gottlieb got kicked our of Notre Dame for some stupid acts and ended up at Oklahoma St.!! I won’t speak of what he did, but I know it’s true and I wouldn’t believe this guy if his freackin tongue came notarized!!! Doug is a punk!!!
May 6th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
43 - Yea he is an idiot.
Bledsoe ranked 23rd
Siva ranked 39th
Him being a UL fan hinders his ability to think.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
47, Funny thing to me is, if we got Siva at UK and Louisville got Bledsoe, they would be saying the exact opposite!! Everyone knows this would be true!!!
May 6th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
No. I think Wall will choose to play elsewhere.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
With or without John Wall, KENTUCKY is back and headed for the top. So if John Wall wants to go to Puke and play in front of 10,000 fans while looking at 2 or 3 banners, then he can. Or Wall can go to Carolina and play in front of 18 or 19,000 while looking at (5) banners then he can. But if he wants to come to Kentucky and play in front of 24,000 while looking at (7) banners, then that’s fine as well.

May 6th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
45 - Thanks, good info that proves the exception to the rule. I agree with what you say about elite players and competition.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Too many sources saying Wall to UK!!!!!!!!
May 6th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Are you all dense?
Wall is coming to UK. I am not speculating, I am not making promises, I am letting you know that it is already completed, but they are waiting to release it. But you will know in less than a week.
Wall is coming to UK.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
39) and could also point out to bledsoe about the success of tyreke evans, who went from being not projected to go in the first round to a lottery pick.

May 6th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
LAUGH OUT LOUD, does John Wall even know who Eric Bledsoe is? I don’t think Bledsoe becoming a Wildcat is a “deal-breaker” on the Wall recruiting at all. Thats not intended to dis Bledsoe either, do you really think Wall’s decision will be based on anything but himself. Can’t remember is Doug “the Douchebag” Gottlieb the guy that has been hating on UK every since Calipari signed the dotted line?
May 6th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Why is it not realistic to think that Wall will be a Wildcat?
Would it have been realistic 2 months ago to say that Calipari is going to be our new coach and he’s going to keep our 2 best recruits and add 2 other top recruits, plus 1 more Top 10 JUCO player for good measure?
mmmm I doubt it…
It’s hardly believable or realistic. But Cal has done it…
Gerry Meyer called what Cal has done in a month or so — “Amazing”
He’s a recruiting wizard and nothing he does surprises me now.
Wall to UK would/will not surprise me.

Does no one know that this is the dribble drive offense. This is not a traditional set where you have two guards two fowards and a center. We will need people to dribble and by looking at last years team we had no one to dribble. Why is it so weird to think that we will have two elite guards who can dribble? I mean this is kentucky, we do have calapari, and we now run the dribble drive. I dont see the problem with having bledose and wall.

I think your just someone who may be UK fan or a UofL fan. I don’t find ignorance in an overly positive situation. Lighten up. This is big news and we would like to see it get bigger. While I won’t accept the post made stating Wall is a done deal by next Wednesday, I will say that I still think positively of him coming. Give negativity a break and let this be an excellent day for the UK fanbase.

People that are completely denying Wall will come because of Bledsoe are fricken ridiculous. Someone else pointed out, Cousins committed with Orton and Patterson possibly back. WHY? BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE’S A TOP 2 RECRUIT. Wall knows he’d start over any PG in the country including seniors. He’s just that good. He’d be happy to have a backup in Bledsoe after playing 30-35 minutes per game. NOW I’M NOT SAYING HE’S COMING BECAUSE NOBODY KNOWS! But don’t let Gottlieb discourage you because he along with everyone except for Digger Phelps, is retarded. BUT, don’t let the UK dreamers that say Wall’s a silent done deal encourage you either. Nothing has been announced. Just feel comfortable our name is still there and it still stands strong. That should at least make you feel better. Having Bledsoe makes me feel encourage alone. Wall would make me start thinking about banner 8.

I officially hate Doug Gottlieb. He didn’t have to be such a dick about it. Ya know, I always saw him on the college basketball shows and I wondered how he actually became an expert.
He has no credentials at all, but always seems to have these, “no-nonsense, rock-solid” comments…and they are usually wrong, or completely obvious. What a douche.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
SWEET, I made a KSR article. I am Brad from Sandusky.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Bledsoe said he had a shot to come in and start, did he say at point guard? If Meeks doesn’t come back, and Wall is in the fold, Bledsoe could very well start at the 2. It’d be him and Hood auditioning for Meek’s minutes. I know Meeks has NO business staying in the draft, but this could have been a selling point as well.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
101)Kind of the way Bill Curry is such an expert on NCAA football, yet he sucked balls at UK. Add Vitale as an ass-clown for a coach thta somehow knows everything about basketball after he got axed.

The naysayer’s aren’t true Kentucky fans so just disregard them. I’m not sure John Wall knows where he is going yet. He is a kid who could go in the draft this year. He knows he’ll play here. Just give him his space until he decides. We have a pg now for next year, but I would love to have two.
May 6th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
JOHN WALL TO MIAMI
It’s so obvoius that he’s going to Miami I just cant figure out what he’s waiting for maybe for the bad press to get off his back. Seriously thnk about it. Wall visits Miami. Wall comes back. Eric Bledsoe list changes from Folorida high intrest to everyone back to being even. The next week Calapari recruits Bledsoe hard. Bledsoe then commits saying that he was told by calapari that he would be the starting pg.
Eighter:
1.Coach Cal blatenly lied to bledsoe and has zero class
2.Coach Cal knows for a fact that meeks will stay in the draft
3or coach knows that Wall will NOT be a wildcat next year
and i think the most reasonable answer would be 3 and it makes since with my reasoning on the first part of my post
May 6th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Well Doug what about…
07 Florida
Calathes #3 PG
Lucas #7 PG
May 6th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
that didn’t work out so well for Florida 112…
hope it works out for UK
May 6th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
99, they should feel the same in regards to him being a program changing guard. Wall is the diamond of the class and I say that without denial. But Wall discussing Baylor and NC State to me is another way to say I’m from North Carolina so I’ll put every big school on my list to show how good I am. And I’ll put Baylor there because my AAU coache’s brother coaches there. The point is, he is liable to head to a huge program and Kentucky AS OF NOW seems the best fit. UNC may slide in or Duke could be put back on top. At this point, who knows.

98, an immature remark with some foolish reference to sex? Am I to be fearful or hurt? You “fans” of some other program that get on here to intimidate, frustrate, or annoy the true fans honestly have too much time on your hands. We understand Louisville will be dirt next year and Kentucky actually won’t. But don’t be obnoxious and endlessly pester people who are having a good time. It’s not cute. It’s immature.

Doug has always disliked UK because he is from big 12 conutry and those pricks are jealous of our beloved UK! Doug is more/ less “hoping” Wall doesn’t come here!!! Nuff said…

Now I don’t know where Wall will be attending school at, but all remember this BullSH@# Madblue has been talking if he does commit. There are other ways going about telling us your opinion. You don’t have to be immature about it. I’m surprised you have yet to be banned.

Bigukfan10 If you’re right about Wall how did Cal lie to him. This kid will start if Wall goes elsewhere.

I agree with number one

119, my 117 post was in regards to that annoyance as well. He’s just a UofL fan or of some other program. But I suppose we get used to these “flies” as Kentucky should be big for at least the next 8 seasons and almost undoubtebly longer.

I hope we get wall to but he’s going to florida where he will play against bledsoe twice.Should make the rivalry that much better

If you look at Jeff Drummond’s article on Cat Pause Wall does not seem to care at all about Bledsoe and and welcomed the competition. He said Calipari let him know he was recruiting Bledsoe and they could play together. Anyway it all still sounded positive to me.
None of us have any idea though and neither does Gottlieb!!

Ok Plinytheyounger I will sleep well tonight. But better be right.

I think so,” said Wall, Rivals.com’s No. 1 prospect for 2009 and the top player remaining on John Calipari’s wish list at Kentucky. “I’m in the process of doing that right now — maybe by tomorrow, hopefully by the end of the week — having it cut down.”
Wall (6-4, 184) has been considering UK, Duke, Baylor, Florida, Kansas, Memphis, Miami, North Carolina and N.C. State. He declined to say which schools might make his narrowed list of three schools, but quickly noted that “Kentucky’s going to be in there. I can tell you that.”
Asked why the Wildcats were assured a spot, Wall added: “I just like coach Cal as the coach. His coaching and his system have always been a strong point for me.”
To make things even more interesting down the stretch, Kentucky announced the signing of another top-rated point guard, five-star Alabama prospect Eric Bledsoe, on Wednesday.
Could that prove to be an obstacle to UK landing another player at the position?
“Nah, not at all,” Wall said. “He’s a great player, and I think he’ll do a good job there, but I’m not afraid of competing against other great players. I have confidence in my game. It would make me better.”
Wall also noted that Calipari was up front with him about recruiting Bledsoe and recently laid out a plan to incorporate both players into his Dribble Drive Motion offense.
“He said there would be plenty of times when they could use both of us on the court at the same time,” Wall said. “No matter what, I know I’d get plenty of playing time. We both would.”
May 6th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
The big question on the minds of fans following his recruitment is “What’s taking so long?”
“I know,” Wall said with a laugh. “It’s just been a little tougher than I thought it would be. I’m trying to make sure I make the right choice.”
And what’s the biggest factor in that decision?
“How I fit in with the coach,” he replied.
Does that bode well for Calipari and the Cats? Many thought Memphis was his leader before Calipari took the job in Lexington.
“I feel good about him,” Wall said. “I like all of the coaches who are recruiting me, but I’ve had a long relationship with coach Cal.”
Wall also dismissed that location would be a key factor in the end.
“I’m used to traveling,” he said. “It’s not such a big deal.”

If Calipari can get Wall to come then he is the KING OF RECRUITING. PERIOD. Us fans need not to worry anymore about getting the best of the best to come our way. BACK TO THE TOP FOR SURE. Now playing with the big boys again.
/Calipari said earlier right after coming to Kentucky. “If we get who I think we get we will play anybody”.
May 6th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
He said who I think we WILL get.

Gottlieb doesn’t know Kentucky basketball. Plain and simple. This isn’t a question & answer session. He’s pretty much throwing his pitch to Wall on why he SHOULDN’T go to UK. Gottlieb wouldn’t like me as a Cat fan somewhat kind of like my dislike for him as a college basketball analyst. Him being an Oklahoma State alum…you’d think he’d have a little more respect for UK basketball considering the coach there now and Sutton for that matter. C’mon Doug, UK has BUILT your favorite basketball program.
May 7th, 2009 at 10:11 am
I would have to agree with Mr.s Gottlieb’s summation of the UK/Wall situation. Coach Cal must have
some kind of inside scoop as to why then he would tell Bledsoe that he would be his starting PG.
You don’t tell a kid that kind of promise unless you know something. I would rather have Bledsoe
for 3 to 4 years than a John “Diva, I like your house” Wall for just 1 year.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Unless it IS possible to run a 2 PG offense. A lot of people seem to think they can co-exist…one of those is Coach Cal. I believe it’s possible.

LMAO….Here’s some Crow, Doug…..enjoy
May 19th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Right on. Doug, I’ve believed you were an idiot for a long time and now here’s some proof. He’s just another sports analyst who will make bold claims out of nowhere, brag about it if he’s right, and pretend it never happened if he’s wrong.
