Kentuckian Kevin Skinner Makes His Debut

by @ 4:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

So we now have this “Americas Top Talent” show, which apparently has been on for four years. It has a British guy that isnt Simon Cowell, one of the Osbornes and David Hassellhoff. With that crew, unless something awful happens, it wont make the blog. But then something like this happens…a Kentuckian named Kevin Skinner comes on stage, puts forth a great performance and makes the blog. Check it out…and try not to want to punch people for snickering at him before he sang…

    Go KY people!

  2. StitchJonesSays Says:

Does he have all his teeth?

  3. WChrisL Says:

Good story. Great guy. But I didn’t think he was as good as some are making him out to be.

  4. Biggass Hungguy Says:

  5. Basteballer Says:

    Mayfield boy?

  6. fatboyob5 Says:

he was ok…nothing great. but ill give him his props.

although….im calling TOTAL b.s on the “im a complete redneck from KY” act he was putting on. he knew what he was doing. playing to the crowd… once again making us look like bums and idiots.

  7. Old_Pogue_Bourbon Says:

Catching Eight Chickens at one time is pretty hard.

  8. high and mighty Says:

Americans are so starved for talent. The monopolized radio stations have lowered the bar so far on talent, even if we get just a little morsel–we pretend that its a feast.

  9. Old_Pogue_Bourbon Says:

5 I’m pretty sure he’s a Boyd County Grad. Hats are surgically attached backward in Boyd County.

  10. recruit_a_shooter Says:

Will they ever put a non-redneck stereotype from KY on TV?

  11. Bluegrasser Says:

I believe that was rehearsed. The producers queued up the banjo music and probably coached him into acting that way. Decent enough performance. Kentucky has many talented singers that could easily do just as well if not better than this guy.

  12. macon_volfan Says:

Somewhere (probably Goldies in the boro) Jon Brennan is crying….
    /true story

  13. larry the cable guy Says:

How many on here saying he was okay could do better? Why haven’t you tried out? If you don’t have the testicular fortitude to get on stage and try it don’t blast those who do. My lord you are the most Debbie Downer bunch of people I have ever saw.

  14. high and mighty Says:

    13. I appreciate his effort. but he isn’t doing anything special at all. he is singing a cover song. get on youtube–there are a million videos of guys and gals doing covers. he is an okay singer, nothing special.

I’d like to see someone get up there and play and sing a song that they wrote. a good one that is. too bad NBC would never allow that.

a young Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young or Joni Mitchell could never get a start in todays culture.

  15. votedmostlikelytokickurazz Says:

Right on Kevin Skinner! I love seeing Kentuckians succeed and 13 I’m with you all the way buddy.

  16. quietude38 Says:

As a Mayfield-area native, I was expecting this to go horribly.

At one point, I actually said to my wife, “They’re not making fun of him. I don’t know how to react.”

  17. BPsycho Says:

#10, Thats what I was about to write lol

  18. TheBigBooyah Says:

    13. Kevin?

  19. the denim that's in 'em Says:

That show is definitely rigged, I’m surprised he didn’t come out barefoot to fit the bill. He did a good job though, they really hyped him up to be America’s version of Susan Boyle

  20. cousin Says:

13 you are 100% wright, there is none of the above making those statements that have the BALLS to get up in front of that many people on national tv and couuld tell there on DAM name.

  21. gobigblue112393 Says:

UL fans always tell me that Kentucky fans are all rednecks, and I tell that all UL fans that they re a loser, cause they were born to do it, and it in their name.

  22. slappy Says:

Good for him. If I was him I wouldn’t have been as gracious… I’d be flicking off the crowd after they laughed at me. Ha! I probably wouldn’t win one of those things.

  23. slappy Says:

err, flipping off the crowd… you know what I mean.

  24. soup Says:

First time the guy is on stage in front of a national audience. He’s gotta be a nervous wreck. It was an outstanding performance. Not just his singing, but he captivated an audience. Is his voice better than Conway or Merle? No. But the guy did a great job and had the audience’s mouths agape. Hope this guy wins it, and it looks like I’m going to have to follow it just to see now.

  25. ukcatsfan2 Says:

Wow! I’d a never guessed that!

I hope the guy wins it all!

  26. high and mighty Says:

    21. I am a musician and I have performed in front of live crowds bigger than that. While I do appreciate his singing ability, if you want to be a musician you have get used to performing in front of a crowd.

  27. Basteballer Says:

I’m guessing he really did work for Tyson down there. But, yeah, he played it up. And why not? You always want to under promise and over produce. That’s what he did. Lower the bar and when you said over it you look all the higher for it.

He’ll have to come a lot stronger than that to win but, hey… he’s goin’ to Vegas!

  28. soup Says:

28- when you say “live” do you include the 100,000 or so people watching on television at home too?

  29. cousin Says:

    28. Why are you not on the show?I know you had a chance. And national TV, I know you been there to!

  30. bmwuk Says:

Watched it twice. I was impressed. Go Kentucky. Sure it was a cover but he did a nice job so to heck with the naysayers. I hope to see his next song. No I don’t watch the show, I just hope you guys link it.

  31. Briar Gates Says:

Makes me long for some O.H. Napier video.

  32. 1badman Says:

This guy happens to be a relative of mine. He is exactly what he appeared to be on the show. Not putting on a “hick” act. He is one of the most humble and likable human beings that you would ever meet. Coincidently he has been blessed with God given talent. He is from Mayfield. In case you flunked geography that is not in the “Golden Triangle”, and is in the far western part of the state.
I, however am not as meek and kind as he. If you think that you are all that, get yourself a major recording contract, because he is going to have one. If you don’t like him because he is country. Well guess what, everybody in Kentucky does not live in the burbs. Whatever reason you don’t like him, I’m sure it will break his heart. As for me, You can kiss my ass!!!

  33. wickedgood Says:

i agree with matt in the intro ,if he had not been awesome he would have been treated as a cross between larry the cable guy and peter griffin.he made good ole country boys proud we are the only minority[rednecks ] who are of what we are and need know special interest to defend us.the only thing that bothers me is how matt can be so liberal and not be offended by what garofolo said about tea parties and redneck racist.they atleast admitted they were wrong on tv last night.once again matt you are the most influential sports info guy in the state and an ambassador for uk

  34. ukfan5989 Says:

I personally thought he was GREAT! He sounds like Alan Jackson. I do have a VERY hard time with anyone who actually thinks he was coached to act that way. He seemed very humble and not one to do something other than be himself. Is it that hard to believe that someone who acts like he did and has his background could sing?

As far as getting up there and not singing a cover song and singing an original goes…this guy is trying to get his big break, why would he not sing a song people know and can identify with? It would be a huge risk to sing an original and one I, personally, wouldn’t want to take if I was doing the same thing. That is more for on down the line once you have set the hook. I thought he had a perfect performance!

  35. justacatfan Says:

    34. Everyone will not like his voice or music. Who gives a rats a$$ what they think. They will not be making millions and singing on stage. Came across as a good home town kid.

  36. mppm Says:

What a powerful and inspiring performance.

    #34. Spot on!

If you negative posters are from Ky you sound awfully envious.

#9. Apparently you think you’re above Boyd Countians. FYI…His hat may have been “surgically attached” backward (requested my the show) because of a logo appearing on the front of his cap. When he walked off stage you could see they had blocked what was on the front of his cap.

#14. He did something very special. He had a phenomemal performance that touched the hearts of many.

When Garth sang that song he was singing a cover song as well. Some of you must have thought he was just okay and he wasn’t doing anything special either?

Kevin, you have a special talent and I thought you were wonderful. Good luck in the future.
