So lets say you are one of those fans that I would call the “average rabid UK fan.” You come on the internet and check this site nearly every day, you follow all the latest information and you know just about everything there is to know about the current team. You like watching recruiting, but you dont get too into the minutia of it all and really are only interested if a player is serious about Kentucky and the Cats are a major player. Well if that is the case, then it is time to follow the case of Josh Selby. If you were on the site this weekend, then you obviously know by now that Selby, a Top 10 player by some services, decommitted from Tennessee and re-opened his recruiting process. After that news, Jeff Goodman got the UK fanbase excited with a comment that UK was the leader for Selby’s services and that the Cats were in a great position for him. All of a sudden Selby and UK seemed to go together like peanut butter and jelly and the thought that the Cats had found their new point guard was ubiquitous.
Then came part two of the story today as a UT website quoted a Tennessee assistant basketball coach as saying “something smells” about the Selby situation. My first thought when I heard the quote was that this would of course be a recruiting violation and that Lane Kiffin would surely call the NCAA office on his fellow coach. However the assistant apparently prefaced this remark by saying he wasnt “talking about any recruit in particular”, but then making clear that the recruiting situation in question had an odor. An assistant coach making such a comment is quite provocative and has made the wider sports world take notice. Deadspin and The Big Lead both did a post about this today and in this slow sports week, the story is gaining traction. So what is the actual situation on Josh Selby?
Well today I spoke with someone close to the UK staff who said that John Calipari has not spoken with Josh Selby since after his Tennessee commitment. Many of the rumors coming out after the decommitment from the Vols had some connection with UK and his decision, but from what I have been told this is not the case at all. The staff likes Selby and expects to recruit him, but not only did they have no role in his decision to decommit from Tennessee, I am told they expect other schools to be coming after Selby hard, including Memphis, North Carolina and Duke. In fact, while interested in Selby, UK also is still pursuing Brandon Knight and it is not likely, with Eric Bledsoe on the roster next year, that they would take both young men. Thus the “Josh Selby decommitted to come to UK” may be a bit premature at best.
Selby is a great basketball player and is going to have a huge impact on the college program he attends. And yes, Kentucky will likely be a player for his services, as his mom suggested to me when we spoke on Sunday. But Kentucky’s role in the process has been exaggerated and from what I am told, it will still be some time before a Selby commitment will take place. Calipari hasnt spoken to Josh and the UK-Selby relationship is not nearly close enough to have led to any decision by him. What happens remains to be seen, but the idea that since changing his mind about the Vols, Selby is ready to pull the trigger tomorrow for the Cats is not likely the case.
We will have more all day as Fake Gimel announces the contestants for the Hollywood Squares game, we introduce more Blogger finalists and we get ready for SEC Football Media Days. Stay tuned…….

Selby is the real deal. I watched him on youtube and he would definitely be a fan favorite at UK if he elects to bring his 5 star game here.

Anybody watch the T.O. show tonight, it was great…
July 20th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I disagree with the notion that Cal wouldn’t try to get Knight and Selby. I’d imagine he makes a big push for both. The odd man out in this case could be Lamb, if he really intends to drag out the process. We will certainly have plenty of scholarships to hand out next year.

I dont believe a word that Cal hasnt spoke to Selby? Even Memphis fans say while Cal was at Memphis that he was still recruiting Josh. Its not like UK would tell the truth. To me there just trying to keep it quiet for a while and then Josh will commit to UK later.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
Why does this story make no mention of the actual ‘issue’ with this entire situation? Everything I’ve seen says it stinks because it implicates Nike and/or WWW for getting in Selby’s ear. Maybe I’m not reading everything, everywhere, but I haven’t seen any direct accusation of Cal making a call or recruiting Josh while he was committed to UT. Hey, I hope we get Selby now that he’s available, but let’s not play charades about the controversy.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:00 am
Verbals are soft commitments and nothing is set in stone until a LOI is signed. This happens on a regular basis and b/c this is a slow time for news the issue is blown out of proportion. How many verbals did Reynardo Sidney and Lance Stephenson give this year before it was over? None of this matters and Coach Cal will do what’s right for the team/UK when the time comes. So, who gives a shit!?! Not me.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:21 am
So Tenn fans are made about the fact that someone or some school might
have been in Selby’s ear while he was committed to Tenn.
Now Tenn fans know how Miss St fans feel
July 21st, 2009 at 12:29 am
#10 Why is no one pointing out the maybe Selby realized he had better
options and opprotunties out there than playing for Pearl at Tenn. What
guards has Pearl really put into the NBA and been successful?
Maybe that is the issue?
July 21st, 2009 at 12:31 am
Lets not forget that Selby isn’t the only 2010 player to decommitt from
Tenn. Maybe these kids are just realizing that Tenn might not be the
best place to put their futures on the line for.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:58 am
14. I agree. I think this says a lot more about the state of the Vols and their failure to deliver on NBA promises than it does WWW or Nike.
Kids see the contrast of Scotty Hopson vs Rose/Evans (all different players, I know, but rankings are everything to these kids) and they think twice about hitching their future to the Orange train. Throw in the slowed development of Tyler Smith and the smoked up future of Ramar Smith (a 5 Star out of HS) and the best days are behind Pearl and the Vols.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:03 am
How many commitments has UK lost to UT and other big name schools in football? A verbal means nothing so UT needs to stop pouting.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:27 am
#15 I agree 100%. Maybe it would have been better for Pearl/Tenn to
put Tyler in this years draft instead of coming back. He really needs
to start putting players in the NBA if he doesn’t want to keep lossing
recruits.
I agree that it doesn’t look good that a high profile player like Tyler
Smith is playing 4 years of college ball. It might be good for Tenn but
that isn’t what HS kids want to see. They don’t to see a highly ranked
kid like Smith out of HS forced to play 4 years because he is simply not
ready for the NBA.
I hate Duke and UNC but if I was a high school elite player I wouldn’t
think twice about putting my future in the hands of Duke or UNC before I
put it in the hands of Tenn and Bruce Pearl.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:29 am
Your also right #15 about Hopson. Although I think Hopson will still
turn out to be an elite player, HS recruits don’t want to see someone
like Hopson, who was ranked in the top 10 of most rankings, have a avg.
freshman year like Hopson had.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:32 am
Save, didn’t you say a few weeks agovto keep our eyes on a decommitment from UT? Now I see why.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:34 am
#19 Yeah but that wasn’t “inside” information. That was pretty much common
knowledge. There were many others on here saying the samething, so I can’t
take credit for that.
I still think there is a very good chance of a even bigger decommittment and
if this person does decommitt it will be to come to UK.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:47 am
Save, I don’t know if anyone has said this or what, but my guess you’re referring to Will Barton.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:57 am
#21 Well I do think Barton isn’t really solid on Memphis, that isn’t
who I am talking about.
This guy is better than Barton, IMO!
We will just have to wait and see. I don’t want to start any rumors
by giving a name that will hurt the chances of it happening. The chances
are already slim enough. However, this player really wants to come to UK
but is just getting a lot of pressure to keep his committment.
This guy, IMO, is a top 3 player in the 2010 class. Most recruiting services
do have him as a top 5 player.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:06 am
It’s possible that with Pastner’s insite into who Calipari is recruiting
he might have told Barton about this committed kid who might decommitt
to come to UK.
It is also possible that Barton is hearing that this kid might not decommitt
now and Barton might be waivering.
However, I am just speculating.
What I do know is that there is a stud who really wants to come to UK who
is committed right now. Well, there actually is two but the other is very
unlikely. I am not sure the other guy is even still thinking decommitting to
come to UK anymore.
The main guy I am talking about is still very much interested in coming to
UK. In fact, I would say that is what he would rather do but sometimes it
just doesn’t work out that way when you are already a committed player in his
situation.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:11 am
That’s very interesting. I still think that Barton isn’t going to be 100%. I think the fact that Cal was in China, etc. during the commit plus the fact that he was so close to pulling for UK that he can’t be 100% sold…yet. But I also am not convinced Cal would go after Barton or listen to Barton because of how bad it would look.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:15 am
#24 I’ll go ahead and tell you who the 2nd possible decommitt is
because I am almost for cetain now it won’t happen. It was DeShaun
Thomas.
The main guy I’m talking about is still a very serious option. UK fans
will be pumped if the guy I am talking about comes to UK. He is Big Time!
July 21st, 2009 at 2:17 am
#24 You’re right Cal won’t talk to Barton or any committed player why
they are committed. This stuff UT fans are trying to say about Cal
talking to Sebly and that is why he decommitted is BS and just their
way of trying to make sense of it.
Why would Calipari have to talk to a committed player when there are people
who can do it for him?
July 21st, 2009 at 2:21 am
22/23. The only top 5 player according to rivals/scout that is a top 5 player committed is Jared Sullinger who is a center so I see no reason why Will Barton would care of his committment as playing time would not be an issue. Well Scout has Tristan Thompson at number 5 but he is a PF so again I see no reason for this to phase Barton.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:24 am
#27 Well the guy I’m talking about plays the same position as Barton.
maybe he isn’t top 5 five on most recruiting services like I assumed.
I pretty sure he is at least top 10.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:25 am
However, if the guy I am talking about isn’t top 5, then despite where
he is ranked he is underrated.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:29 am
reggie bullock is committed to UNC and also plays SG?
July 21st, 2009 at 2:31 am
#30 I think it is best to stop searching for the name. We don’t need
rumors out there that might hurt our chances of it happening.
It’s not bullock, which pretty much only leaves one other person, so
lets just leave it at that.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:35 am
There is also an elite player looking to transfer and UK would be high
on his short list if he decided to transfer. I am for sure that this
was a big possibility at one point this summer but that has really
dwindled as the summer went on but is picking up a little bit of steam
again. Hint - He is a frontcourt player that fits in the DDMO who currently
plays for an ACC team.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:36 am
I’m just trying to figure out how this guy is much better than Will Barton when the people who get paid to do scouting just don’t aren’t seeing the same thing that you are seeing. Will Barton is a top 10 player and top 2 shooting gaurd on both rivals and scout. I guess they just haven’t seen as much of this guy as you have.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:38 am
#33 Have to remember that just because those scouting services say
he plays one position doesn’t mean that is the position he would actually
play in college.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:40 am
I don’t see any other top 10 players who are either a PG or a SF that are committed to a school.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:46 am
#35 I haven’t looked at the main recruiting sites recently but I would
think he would be a top 10 player for sure. IDK but I’m guessing you’re
probably looking at rivals. They seem to always mess up rankings and put
guys in the top 10 who have no buisness in the top 10 and not only leave
out guys who should be in the top 10 but also seem to rate them alot
lower than they obiviously should be.
So my guess is that you’re looking a rivals. I tend to use scout more.
They seem to be the most accurate on their rankings.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:49 am
#35 Like I said I haven’t been to the main recruiting services recently.
Do they have Melo ranked high? I am telling everyone right now that I am
predicting that Melo will be good but not as good as his ranking would
suggest.
He is a overrated big man in a class that doesn’t have a lot of big
man talent. I would take Orton way before any big man in the 2010 class.
That is how good the 09 frontcourt class is.
On the other hand I would almost bet that Evan Anderson is ranked lower
than he should be in the 2010 class. That kid is a stud and Wisconsin
got them a real good one in Anderson.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:55 am
I look at them both actually but your much preferred scout does have a guy at #6 who plays SF that is committed to a big 10 school who rivals has at #22. So Im guessing this is why you say that I only look at rivals. I just think that scout may have this guy a little high when looking at some of the guys behind him. He is still a very good player as you can tell by the 5 star ranking by both sites.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:55 am
Jereme Richmond
July 21st, 2009 at 2:59 am
I’d say a 7 feet big man with a very nice shooting touch who can get up and down the floor well would deserve a top 10 ranking any day of the week.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:59 am
IMO, there are a lot of players in the 2010 class that are underrated
and a lot that are overrated.
In fact considering who we should have returning in 2010, I would almost
take some “lower ranked” players that are good enough to play at UK but
will stay 3-4 years before I take some of the “studs” in the 2010 class.
UK can afford to do that considering the type of talent that will be returning
and will have gained experience.
I think these guys are underrated:
Justin Martin
Evan Anderson - way underrated
Marcus Thorton - He is committed. I think to Clemson
Russell Byrd - Committed to MSU
K.T Harrell
Rion Brown
These kids will shock people in the future how good they really are
July 21st, 2009 at 3:04 am
Yeah but with 6 possible scholarships available in 2010, I would still like to get at leat 3 to 4 five star players and the other 2 scholarships filled with role players who may not contribute as much as the big time targets. Just because we get 5 star players doesn’t mean that they are one and done. Patrick Patterson was a 5 star as was Tyler Hansbrough and many more.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:05 am
#40 there isn’t a big man in this class I would really want considering
we have Orton who will be returning and maybe even Cousins. I much
rather have a guy like Tobias Harris who will stick around for at least
a couple of years and possible 4 years. A developed Harris down the road
would be the kind of experienced player teams dream of.
The only so called “elite frontcourt” player I really want bad is CJ Leslie
but that is because he can play the 3 as well and at the 4 spot he really needs
to be in a system like the DDMO where can play facing the basket.
I really want CJ Leslise in a Wildcat uniform along with Tobias Harris.
I’m almost ready to say with 100% certainty that Leslie will be at UK. Not
just yet but almost. I think there is a more than great chance we end up
with CJ and Harris, which would be awesome
July 21st, 2009 at 3:07 am
#42 True but we are also in position with some really good talent
that will stick around, that I there are players like Harris I much
rather have because I think with development he could end up being
better than a lot of guys at his position ranked higher than him eventhough
they will be gettind developed as well.
Much rather have Harris for 3-4 years than lets say a Adrian Payne for
1 or 2 years.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:08 am
Plus there are a lot of big men in the 2011 class that, RIGHT NOW, I
would take over pretty much every big man in the 2010 class.
Like Christmas, McAdoo, O’Bryant, etc
July 21st, 2009 at 3:11 am
Just because we will probably have Orton doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t recruit guys who play the same position. I dont know if you watch big men play, most of them get tired and need to come out of the game. I would love to have Adrein Payne come to UK to give Daniel a break when he gets tired. We all thought Jodie was going to stay for his senior year but that didn’t stop Coach Cal from getting Darnell Dodson, Eric Bledsoe, and John Wall to come to UK. Just because we will have guys returning doesn’t mean we should stop recruiting the best of the best.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:18 am
#46 I agree but I think Harris and Leslie will do just fine considering
they fit the DDMO. Plus Leslie is a guy who can play 3 positions in
college and Harris can play two, thanks the the DDMO.
Those are the two “frontcourt” players I want from this class to go
along with a returning Orton and Harrellson. Remember that Miller can
play the “PF” spot in the DDMO because the 3 and 4 spot are both wing
positions in the DDMO.
Then if Orton leaves after year two and we can at least keep Harris and
probably CJ. Then we can add Christmas (who is already a stud right now)
and O’bryant from the 2011 class.
You’re right we should always continue to recruit the best of the best but
considering who you have, if you have the ability to bring in a player
that is 1) good enough to play at this level and 2) will stick around
for 4 years and provide valuable experience with a high level of talent,
then you sometimes have to go that route.
Example: You already got Bledsoe. If you get Knight and Doron, you don’t
take Selby as well. If you have a team with Bledsoe, Knight, Doron, Hood
at the guard positions you try to get either a Jeremy Lamb or convince a
Ricardo Johnson to walk-on and maybe earn a scholorship down the road.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:20 am
#46 Forgot to add - I agree with you on Payne. I love to have a him
as a Wildcat. There was one point not long ago I thought we had no chance.
It looks like Calipari might be working his magic and doing a good job
rebuilding a strong relationship between Payne and UK.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:27 am
I just dont think that Harris can defend a PF in a normal offense. Cal has said multiple times that his teams are going to focus on defense. Everyone just talks about the DDMO but its been his team’s defense in the past years that have won 30 games a season. I like Leslie a lot, too because of his super athleticism. I could see him defending multiple positions in college because of that. Shoot with at least 5 scholarships available but most likely 6, I say we just take em’ all. I would like to see us get Brandon Knight and CJ Leslie for sure. And then throw in Doron Lamb and a few others and I think we have another #1 recruiting class.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:33 am
#49 Sounds good to me. Truthfully we don’t even need the #1 2010 class
to actually have the #1 class. If we got CJ, Knight, and some good 4 star
players, we might not have the #1 class (still be a top 10 class) but if
you add them to Orton, Bledsoe, Miller, Dodson, Hood, Liggins, and Harrellson;
you might as well call the #1 class.
I wish there was a scouting service with good scouts that would come up
with a rating system that calculates the how good the players in the recruiting
class are for each school with who will be returning on the team.
Does that make sense?
July 21st, 2009 at 3:35 am
Gotta head to bed. It’s Been good having a basketball discussion on here.
That is hard sometimes.
I’m going to go to bed now and while most men dream about hot women, I will
be dreaming about what are team will be like next year.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:36 am
yeah but if we got a 5 man class with 3 five stars and 2 four stars. I don’t see there being any way that wouldn’t be the top class.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:38 am
#52 wait to you see who we end up getting in the 2011 class when it
is all said and done. I predict in 2011 UK will have the best recruiting
class of all time.
Thats another whole long discussion and I got to get to bed or I’ll start
discussing 2011 for another couple of hours, LOL!
July 21st, 2009 at 4:23 am
2011 could be a year with limited scholarships unless we only carry 11 on the team next year or someone doesn’t turn pro who is expected to after this season.

Who in hell cares ifin Cal has been talkin to this kid or not.Fact is TN is an underacheiving team. Alway has been and always will be. Why would an Achiever like Selby want to play there?
July 21st, 2009 at 7:38 am
Its unlikely he will be a cat but who knows. Tennessee fans need to understand the pecking order in college basketball. Tennessee isnt going to amount to enough to get upset. When UT fans want to watch basketball, they simply watch the women there show the men how its done.
July 21st, 2009 at 7:56 am
6) Hey Frosty Tips log-in name number #63…has it occured to you that maybe Selby wants to play for a real basketball school? The kid can get a better deal, and better colors to wear. Stop trying to crap on Cal…he does nothing more than Pearl or any other coach in the land…they are all the same.

July 21st, 2009 at 8:49 am
Ya know, there is nothing in any NCAA legislation which prevents a coach from talking to a player who is VERBALLY committed to another school. It may be a bit unethical, but it isn’t illegal.
July 21st, 2009 at 8:51 am
Is save uk talking about Tristan Thompson or Jereme Richmond decommiting above in posts 20 - 40?
July 21st, 2009 at 8:59 am
#59 if Save isn’t coach Cal he’s sure informed about the kids that can play for sure…..Who the hell cares what Tn. says or thinks as that matters. Pearl had his day in the sun. IMO he’s just a paid cheerleader that Summit ought to have at every women’s game.

Every time there is a issue with a kid that Cal has recruited in the past, these jokers are ready to yell, Foul. As for posters #5 and #6, I’d suggest that you stay on your Memphis Blogs cause I’m pretty sure your moles. My bet would be that something specific has happened within the U.T. program that has turned the young man off, have no idea what that would be, but that’s my guess.

I think you may be on to something there. As everyone knows, a coach cannot make public statements about a recruit until there is a signed letter of intent. However, if a coach was using a message board like this one and releasing info under a screen name, and told noone (even his assistant coaches) that it was him, then how would the NCAA ever know??? A good way to keep a buzz around your program and thus keep your program in the news and thus keep your program in the minds of all the recruits! I don’t think SaveUK is coach Cal, but it WOULD be genius of him!!
July 21st, 2009 at 9:28 am
#59 - Or if the person had listened to a certain report that came out yesterday and posted it today as his own info the same sort of impression could be gathered.
July 21st, 2009 at 9:28 am
7) they dont actually get to play any ball…they wait in line for a couple hours to check in, wait to hear their team name called, fill out the appropriate forms, wait to hear their name called again only to find out they didnt fill out the appropriate forms, fill out the new forms and leave to get them notarized…only to find out the gym is closed when they return.
