On Friday we discussed the kinda-sorta tradition of hammering a nail into the basketball court when an exceptional shot was made. The two instances that I have been able to confirm are Joe Hagan’s jumper in 1938 and Ralph Beard’s 52-foot shot in 1948. Coach Calipari references this tradition in the Golden Spike section of his website.
I asked you guys to name some of the most dramatic/memorable shots that has been made in the Rupp Arena. Sadly, since the post came out on a Friday, there weren’t many suggestions. Here’s a quick cut-and-paste (and not fact-checked) list of nominations (and the reader(s) who nominated):
* Tayshaun’s 5th 3-pointer against UNC (Fake Gimel)
* Jodie Meeks’ game winner against Florida this past year (gossie21)
* Gerald Fitch’s 3 against UNC in 2004 (gossie21)
* Cedric Jenkins put-back against Louisville (TheBigBooyah)
* Rondo’s 3 that sealed the deal against South Carolina (Bluegrassed & jsh2001)
* [The] drive from Hawkins against UL when he left his defender NAILED to the floor (Squirms)
* Antwain Barbour’s reverse dunk on #1 Florida in Feb 2003 (PioneerWildcat)
* Fred Cowan’s baseline buzzer beater to beat Tennessee in 1981 (1933 National Champion)
* Roger Harden demanding the ball and knocking down the jumper to beat LSU in the 1986 SEC Tournament in Rupp (1933 National Champion) — BTI, I’d love to see a video of this!
* Rex Chapman’s double clutch at the elbow to beat Ole Miss at the buzzer in 1987. (1933 National Champion)
* Richie Farmer beats Ole Miss at the buzzer in 1989. (1933 National Champion)
* Farmer’s 6 free throws to hold off LSU in 1990. (1933 National Champion)
* Tay’s left handed baby hook to beat Florida in 2001 (catlanta91)
Surely there are other memorable/amazing shots to pick from as well. Please leave your nominations in the comments. Remember that the shot must occur in a game held in Rupp Arena.

I remember that Richie Farmer shot against Ole Miss. I was on the front row and the place just exploded when he hit that shot. The program was at a bit of a low point at that time and Richie was the darling of the team. If I’m not mistaken, I believe he had shaved off his mustache before that game.

Also, going away from the college game…one of the more popular shots ever hit in Rupp was by Paul Andrews to win the 1982 Sweet 16.

Todd Svoboda’s last second shot against Tennessee for the 101-40 win in 3/12/1993 in the SEC Tournament. It was the highest point total ever in the SEC tournament, and forever slayed the SEC tournament being played on member teams’ home courts.

Four candidates (3 of which are non-UK, but recognize the importance of Rupp Arena to Kentucky basketball and college basketball):
1) the spot where Kyle Macy hit the jumper after the Dwight Anderson steal to tie Kansas in the ‘78 comeback game
2) the spot where Paul Andrews hit the 60 footer at the buzzer to win the ‘82 state championship for Laurel County
3) the spot where Dwayne McClain inbounded the ball and ran out the clock in the ‘85 title game for Villanova
4) the spot on the free throw line where Jason Williams of Duke missed the potential game-tying free throw against Indiana in the ‘02 NCAA tournament

Also, the spot where Rick Jones of Scott County sank the 3-pointer to knock off heavily favored LexCath in the 1998 State Tourney.

More on the Paul Andrews shot. It has to be considered the most memorable shot and greatest finish in Sweet 16 history. And there is a UK connection other than Rupp Arena, as Andrews was able to parlay the notoriety from that shot into a scholarship offer from Coach Hall. Andrews ended up being a spot contributor on Coach Hall’s last team and Coach Sutton’s first two teams. One correction to my earlier post, though: the shot was just a few feet behind half-court, so it was more like 50 feet than 60 feet.
