The new Associated Press poll was released today with lots of anticipation and speculating from the talking heads about who would be the number 1 team in the country. Ultimately, Alabama assumed the top spot previously held by Texas, but that headline wasn’t the most interesting part of the story to me. That tidbit was found under “Others Receiving Votes” and listed the University of Louisville with 8 points received. That’s right, folks. That 5-3 team down I-64, fresh off of a loss to one of the worst teams in the history of college football got top 25 votes.
So, who can they thank for this? Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times, who has Louisville ranked at #18, two spots ahead of the conference leader West Virginia and four spots ahead of the second-best Big East team, Pitt. Mr. Bloomquist even has the Filthy Cards, currently sixth in the Big East, ranked six spots ahead of the Georgia Bulldogs, who’s only losses have come to his #1 and #7 team.
Now, that’s just dumb.

Wonder if he got his football and basketball ballots mixed up, maybe?
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Maybe he thought LSU was the University of Louisiana and therefore entered “UL.”

Look at his top 7. I bet he doesn’t even see football outside of the Big 12.
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
wait, are you telling me that this douchetard plays a part in the BCS?
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
I assume the Cats didn’t get any points?
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
If they lose to Pittsburgh this weekend, UL might make his Top Ten list.
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Everyone knows Louisville is better than West Virginia. I’m joking!
November 2nd, 2008 at 6:56 pm
If Mr. Bloomquist is correct, we should be favored over Georgia.

Maybe he normally writes obituaries and is just filling in temporarily in the sports department.
November 2nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm
If he writes obituaries Louisville football would be much higher than 18th.

More proof that the system is messed up as some of the voters do not do any type of research prior to voting and also the coaches let their assistants do the voting for them.

What makes it even worse, if that is possible, is that he had UL rank 25th the week before. So they lose, that lose is to the 116th ranked team in the country and they move up 7 places. Thats just great and what is wrong with the college system today.

Nice catch Beisner.
Even though the current system does suck, this is not another reason it sucks as it doesn’t appear that the AP Poll plays a role in the BCS rankings, just the Harris Poll and the USA/Today Coaches Poll.

All this gives us is just aother reason to give rankings done by peers of Jerry Tipton (human turds) less credence.
