This is Difficult to See

by @ 4:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Seeing this hurt. From our good friends at Storming the Floor, comes this list of the highest basketball budgets in the country. Not surprisingly, the Cats are number one, meaning that they spend more on basketball than any school in the country, a heft 9.2 million bucks. Now go to the bottom of the list…..who spends less on college basketball than any school in America? How about VMI ranked, No. 339, and only spending $99,000 a year on basketball. Last beat first….and it most certainly hurt.

Nevermind my screen name, I say we fire Gillispie. VMI and Gardner-Webb is just too much to fathom.

  2. Wookin Pa Nub Says:

    …shit

  3. Burly Says:

I would rather watch VMI’s style of play than the high low set BCG runs. Just think we could save millions a year.

  4. jwbm Says:

Must be democrats running the UK program….

  5. BillyClyde4President Says:

First of all, Gardner-Webb struts into RUPP and lays down a can of whoop anus on Gillispie 84-68 and then VMI struts into RUPP and simply kicks the shiz-natt out of Gillispie and Gillispie has 3 times the talent that VMI has!!! Folks, I feel stupid for choosing my screen name. Billy Gillispie should move back to Texas before Longwood and Delaware State come to town!!!

PS: It’s time to bring Travis Ford home.

  6. SeoulCat Says:

Wow. Vandy has a larger budget than UNC, Kansas, and UCLA.

    Who’d'a’thunkit?

  7. SagaciousMind Says:

The Gardner-Webb loss was worse than the VMI lose. VMI for their conference will be a very good team, they are full of seniors and if they are team that can make the NCAA tourney, they will. It was like gettin beat by San Diego last year…wasnt so bad cuz they made the tourney and beat UConn. From what I have heard, Gillispie takes full blame in the loss sayin he didnt prepare better. They seemed to have been kinda over lookin that game. And he is always talkin about ball pressure, pickin the player up as they approach half court and they didnt do that. Not to mention, every player for VMI was out around the 3pt line. The UNC game will be different because they will not play spread like that, they will have a post game. I think losing to VMI was a good thing. It showed them they are not the shit yet and they still have work they need to do. It makes them hungry and embarrassed so goin into this UNC game will be interesting. Remember, the 02-03 team started out horribly and ended up winning out in the conference. UK will have a good season this year. And besides, Patterson was non-existent and that’s not gonna be that case against UNC. There was a reporter that asked him about Hansbrough before the VMI game and he said he wasnt tryin to look past VMI, but yeah in the back of his head he was thinking about Hansbrough and he cant wait. I dont expect to see that same lethargic team we saw against VMI when playin UNC. The VMI loss sounds bad, but truly, it may just have been a good thing. I guess we will see come Tuesday night. It sucks we lost to VMI, but there were a lot of good things I saw in that game from individual players; that we have several players that can make drive to the basket and make things happen. Turnovers and free throws was the main reason for that loss. But it’s not the end of the world. Gillispie is our coach and when things get turned around, for those who are bashin him already and wantin him gone I dont want to hear you gettin all excited and praising him…either stay on the band wagon or get off and stay. He’s not Tubby, he is another Pitino and people are goin to find that out soon. Just look at his track record.

  8. GottaLoveThoseCats Says:

Just shows that money can’t buy everything. Why all this talk about firing BCG? Wasn’t too long ago he was the next coming of Christ. Are you guys ever satisfied? Sure they are very disappointing loses and leaves an inconceivable taste in ones mouth but that is what they are, losses. We aren’t the first team to get beat by a lesser team, we won’t be the last. BCG has brought so much excitement to the game with his ability to recruit. The ones saying he can’t coach needs to wake up or maybe ponder on how he actually got to where he is today. He out coached Pearl in Knoxville last year and the baseline play he called against Georgia in the SEC Tourney was pure genius and if the refs had made the right call we would have been two free throws away from the title. The fans that attack his character based on his night life and “habits” needs to find a shot of testosterone or tell the wife and her friends you won’t be able to make the Scrabble game on Saturday night and go hole up with a bottle of scotch in some sleazy strip club, because you are starting to sound like a hen house full of gossiping, finger pointing women. You’ll see after Tuesday nights game how much respect this team and coach deserves. By the way Matt do you have any stats on Bi-Polar Disorder in the state of Kentucky? Seems a lot of fans suffer from it between wins and losses….

  9. champ1023 Says:

#7 and #8, Pure genius. Amen to both.

  10. GOAT Says:

Amen to #9’s amen to #7 and #8

  11. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

I’d say Kentucky is getting it’s money’s worth. Being that it has more wins than any team in the country, 2nd most Championships, and a coach digging us out of a hole that Tubby Smiff dug us as far as bench and depth.

If I’m not mistaken, that money spent is aimed for success in March. I don’t think anyone of the people who signs the checks are worried about this loss to VMI.

Early basketball losses considering the limited time these guys are allowed to spend with their coaches aren’t as big of a deal as you people seem to want to make them. You see the national media grab it and run (and they do that because they look for opportunities to laugh at UK because they are ACC boys) and some of you start buying the hyped importance.

  12. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

Can I get an Allah Akbar?

  13. UKNation Says:

#11. For the love of God quit blaming Tubby!!! Tubby recruited great players (um… look at the NBA) maybe we didn’t have enough but my gosh get OFF OF IT!

95 out of 100 times we beat VMI… Friday night was just one of those 5 (they shot lights out). Their is a word “upset” for a reason, it just happens. The sky isn’t falling just yet. Perhaps they were looking too much to Tuesday night.

  14. msnthrop Says:

If this loss contributes to PPat staying for his junior year, I’ll take it.

  15. JJkatfan_13 Says:

    1) shut up. He isnt the problem. Its one dang game. Calm down.

  16. 10, 2, and 4 Says:

Some portion of our fanbase is predetermined to call for the coach to be fired at some low-level adversity. Those are usually the loud, and cravers of attention. So their numbers are overestimated due to both the “squeaky wheel” factor and the media’s love of lending a stage for the rest of the basketball nation of our “circular firing squad”.

Sure this loss is bad, but the talk of firing Gillispie is exponentially worse. It’s bringing the 05 through 07 seasons back out and picking at the scab, on purpose even, and for no good reason.

Look, BCG know what’s best for the team. So lighten up.

Accordingly, keep in mind troublemakers are always at the keyboard….

  17. Choo36 Says:

I swear I wish the UK fans who year in and year out want to fire someone because of what happens would just seriously find another team to cheer for. You people are disgusting. Look at what Coach G did last year with a group of guys who didnt stand a chance after PPat and Meeks both are gone for the year. He took a group of underachievers and made the SEC interesting. Sure we lost to a Marq team who by far had more talent. But he made it respectable. Most programs would have folded after losing to stars like Coach G did. But he didnt, he rallied his team, CHANGED HIS OWN coaching style to exploit the strength of both Bradley and Crawford. It wasnt any secret that VMI could light the scoreboard up…they scored more points than any other team in the nation last year and lost nobody from that team. Sure it sucks that we lost..but you know what, I think it will do nothing but help us. Who cares what the nation thinks about UK bball right now. I can gaurentee you that UK will not play that lethargic on D ONE MORE TIME this year. You can bet the trash cans were put back on the court for these next few days of practice.

“Billy Gillispie should move back to Texas before Longwood and Delaware State come to town!!!” Change your username before you make more of us true blue fans puke even more. What a disgrace.

  18. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

VMI is down by 4 @ Virginia right now (15:31 left in 2nd half).

    VMI 60
    Virginia 64

  19. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

Virginia is 17th on your list Matt @ 5.4 Million.

  20. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

#13 - UKNation - The teams Tubby had lined up for 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010 IS THE REASON HE LEFT. Kentucky was the University of Georgia, a bunch of role players with holes in their games and a good shooting guard (Meeks).

He didn’t have anyone coming in here worth a $#!+ and couldn’t get a signature from Patterson or Lucas.

    Can you say Mark Coury?

  21. IkeDaddyUK Says:

I would point out that programs like VMI’s get paid to come to programs like ours. Probably helps out their expenditures a bit. Might want to put a little bit of context in with the statement, Jonesie.

  22. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

With 8:24 left in the 2nd Half @ Virginia:

    VMI 81
    Virginia 81

  23. Choo36 Says:

Hmmmmm…VMI who? They might be playing out of their minds..but they are legit as of right now. I guess they should fire Virginias coach too huh?

  24. JimmyJam Says:

Way to go Matt, another way to embarass UK like you dont do that enough already.

  25. Choo36 Says:

Matt if you can create a moderater that can ban people from posting…I am offering my services.

  26. workingman Says:

Great, so UK is almost as good as Virginia.

  27. bigcatelswick Says:

    parity

  28. catinlon27 Says:

#5. you’re terrible a do not deserve to be a UK fan. let me rephrase that you are not a UK fan.

  29. workingman Says:

    #28

    9mil vs 99k

We are on the wrong end of the parity.

  30. champ1023 Says:

Someone needs to bookmark the VMI game thread so when the idiots calling for coaches head jump back on the bandwagon when Billy G hangs number 8 we can throw them right back off.

    Idiots I say.

  31. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

#27 - workingman - What did you expect we would be like with Mark Coury as a recruit?

I guess you’ve seen basketball rebuilds done in 1 year before. Can you tell me where that was at?

  32. workingman Says:

32 we should have won that game. I don’t expect a final 4 run or even sweet 16 but I do expect to beat VMI at Rupp. We have the players to do that.

  33. Choo36 Says:

33.. You are right we do have the players to beat VMI at Rupp. But we didnt. Quit being so pestimistic and realize that it was the first game of the year. Do you honestly think in your mind this team will fail for the rest of the year because of one game?

  34. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

#33 - workingman - Not on Saturday night we couldn’t. They were on fire and we have an unusual group.

The one bright light for us is Meeks and yet he will be scouted by other teams as selfish in the open floor. He doesn’t look for the open man at this point in transition.

So when you add that with no PG you basically have a problem that will need to be fixed. Luckily those weaknesses aren’t so exposed against a team like Carolina, since we most likely won’t be forced into presses and will be able to set up in and against half court offense.

  35. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

So VMI pushes Virginia to the wire and Virginia pulls it out in the end as VMI missed their 3’s in the final minute and Virginia made their free throws.

    Fnal Score:

    VMI 97
    Virginia 107

  36. workingman Says:

So I’m being pessimistic. Actually I’m not at all. I’m just pissed we didn’t win. I believe that is the natural reaction for what happened Friday night. Should I be blindly optimistic based on that game?

Now I don’t think one bad game wrecks the season but its not exactly a mood brightener for the weekend. Do you honestly believe getting beat at home by VMI is proof positive they are headed in the right direction?

  37. Choo36 Says:

No I dont see it as a step in the right direction but I do have faith and wont let this loss ruin my excitement for the new season. Yes you should be blindly optimistic as the recruiting class we brought in this year and the one for next year are as exciting as many can remember.

  38. Rainbow_Man Says:

It sucks being a Kentucky fan nowdays. Gillispie took the blame for this loss, and I agree. We didn’t play Kentucky basketball, we played VMI basketball, and once again looked like the horses ass. NORTH CAROLINA is going to steamroll us, and Gillispie is to blame. Tubby Smith can coach circles around this clown.

  39. Choo36 Says:

And you can keep sliding down that rainbow of yours.

  40. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

You win with recruits, style of play, discipline.

We’ve got 2 of the 3 headed in the right direction, and the “style of play” isn’t as big of an issue until we start getting destroyed by a team in the paint and have no zone option to use. With the recruits we have coming in here, I just don’t see us getting destroyed in the paint in man to man.

Certainly it would be nice to press occasionally, however to do it successfully (Pitino 1996, 1997), that is a luxury of an extremely deep bench and a risk taken against teams that like to run and gun.

The two things you can’t win in the tournament with is lack of discipline and/or recruits. those 2 issues left for Minnesota.

I consider that a POSITIVE SUM GAIN from 0/3 to 2/3 in favor of our program going in the right direction.

  41. Randy Says:

    your name is rainbow man

  42. Rainbow_Man Says:

    42. Not as gay as “Randy”.

  43. Chris Minton Says:

41- that is damn well put

  44. Randy Says:

    ur name is RAINBOW man

  45. champ1023 Says:

Both of your comeback skills are atrocious. Just sayin’ :)

  46. BillyClyde4President Says:

I’m sorry but there is NO and I repeat NO excuse for the VMI loss. And the Gardner-Webb loss was not as bad as the VMI loss because last year there was a lot of adversity and the players were adjusting and the coach was adjusting etc. This year was supposed to be different. The VMI loss is BY FAR the worst loss in UK basketball’s history!!!

  47. SagaciousMind Says:

#39, you’re wrong about Tubby being able to coach circles around Gillispie. He took a team that went 0-16 in the conference the year before he got there and turned them into a top 5 team in just 3 years. He was Bill Self’s assistant so you know he has his style of play…Self just won a championship. In 2005 when Illinois made it to that championship game, Deron Williams, Dee Brown, Luther Head and the other players…they were players Gillispie recruited. People just dont even understand how good UK is about to be. I do expect a sweet 16, maybe even elite 8 run this year. And next year, I’ll expect a definite elite 8 and possible final four. Reason being, this is UK and look at the recruits we have. All can come in and contribute immediately and next year with more experience, UK will be a very good team and everyone bashing Gillispie will be eating their words. Tubby and Billy are just two different coaches and Billy is the style of coach UK is use to and needs. People are just too impatient and think things are going to change immediately, but when you think about it they have. Two very good recruiting classes back to back and already starting on another good class for 2010. Mark my words, UK will be in the final four within the next 3 seasons. If he can do that with the lowest school in the Big XII, think what he will do with UK. When it happens, I’ll be laughin and rubbin it in all the doubters faces.

  48. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

    # 43 - Rainbow_Man - You are aware that the Rainbow was claimed by the gay community (and Duke alumni) as the official symbol for their swordfighting activites?

  49. SagaciousMind Says:

47, VMI is a better team than Gardner Webb was last year with the possibility to do serious damage in their league and make the tourney. You dont know what you are talkin about if you think losing to Gardner Webb wasn’t worse than this loss. UK didn’t play well at all against Gardner Webb, they straight up got beat. They pretty much beat themselves in this game because of 20+ turnovers and missing free throws. Argue your case all you want, but you are wrong about that.

  50. BillyClyde4President Says:

IMO, Tubby can outcoach Gillispie but Tubby lost interest at UK and that’s why he was ran out of town. Tubby did go 16-0 in the SEC in 2003 and that’s something Gillispie will NEVER even come close to doing.

  51. Duke_Fan_Comes_In_Peace Says:

Been gone all weekend, but how in the world did Kentucky lose to VMI…….and in football to Vanderbilt. When we played Vanderbilt, I wasn’t impressed at all. I’ll be rooting for you all this Tuesday against the pure evil known as North Carolina.

  52. BillyClyde4President Says:

50: The VMI loss was ten times worse than Gardner-Webb. You must understand all the turmoil that was present during last year with Gillispie bringing “Boot Camp” to the players when they were all used to cupcaking it under Tubby. Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley sat in their cars and gave serious thought to quitting the team and you can read that for yourself in the Cats Pause book (This year’s edition). Therefore NONE of the players were getting along with the coaching staff and vice versa and we had no chemistry. That’s why we started 6-7. Then the team clicked and we got better and went 12-4 in the SEC with all those injuries.

But this year was supposed to be different. We had a Top 20 national recruiting class with Miller and LIggins and Galloway and Harrellson and we had depth and we had no injuries and we had 24,000 crazy fans in RUPP!!!!! And we also had a little team called VMI come in and kick our ACE!!!!!!! By far the worst loss EVER for UK!!!

  53. 10, 2, and 4 Says:

    53. No, sir. No, it wasn’t.

  54. Choo36 Says:

You ever thought about two 22 year olds having an immature moment in their life? I bet if you asked those two to talk about why they sat in that car, you would be surprised.

  55. gillispiesflask Says:

i say move the rich old farts up north and let their grandkids nap on their laps.

  56. gillispiesflask Says:

    52) because we suck complete ass…that is how. and we have no crowd like you guys have at duke..too many old rich arm crossed douchebags near the court.

  57. gillispiesflask Says:

Tubby did a good job at getting our asses whipped by vandy 4 in a row; 2 straight losses to them AT RUPP…

  58. BillyClyde4President Says:

54: You are entitled to your opinion as much as I am and I will go to my grave KNOWING that the VMI loss was worse simply because Gillispie has a year under his belt, he’s seen the SEC, he’s seen the NCAA, his players know what he’s all about etc. Therefore the VMI loss was worse but the sad thing is, BOTH of the losses will forever be sketched into the history books and NO OTHER UK coach has ever humiliated UK like BCG did with those two losses.

  59. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

I’m glad we lost at least once this year. Shoooo weeee!

Now that we’ve got that out of the way… let’s break Zeller’s leg!

  60. Choo36 Says:

then please..please change your username. if you hate him that much, dont praise him with the name. You sound like a Louisville fan hating on Kragthorpe. I bet you made fun of those guys once upon a time huh….well, congratulations, you have dropped to their level.

  61. fritos Says:

52: Looks like Duke barely scraped a win together over Rhode Island.

  62. 10, 2, and 4 Says:

BC4President, for instance the 27 point loss to Kansas two years ago was far more humiliating. Exaggerate often?

  63. fritos Says:

59: So why don’t you do something about it.. make yourself useful and write a letter, make a phone call, or better yet, jump off a building.

I’ve heard people talking about how Coach shouldn’t have pressured so hard, so far out (leaving us to get beat off the perimeter, leading to fouls on Patterson, leading to his lack of touches)..
People have to understand that in your mouth man-on-man is what he does..it’s all he does.
For now, at the very start of his second season, it’s going to cause some problems for us. Before too long however, it will click and we will be a dominant defensive force.

  64. SagaciousMind Says:

If Tubby can out coach, why did the program go downhill? Why did UGA stay a mediocre team under him? If he is such a great coach, then why did he do nothing with his #1 recruiting class in 04? Instead, thats when things started goin downhill. When Tubby went 16-0, the SEC wasnt as even as it is now that Gillispie is around. I bet you anything UK will have a year they go undefeated again. Gillispie is by far the better all around coach. I bet you were probably one of them that wanted Tubby gone and now you’re all in love again.

  65. westcoastukfan Says:

BCG needs to reevaluate the situation and correct what HE is doing. Adapt to this team or we’ll we get the crap kicked out of us. Please offer Jai Lucas a spot so atleast next year we have a PG!!! It might make Patrick stick around another year…

  66. SagaciousMind Says:

    54, I agree with you.

  67. Randy Says:

Yeah Lucas would have came in handy..

  68. westcoastukfan Says:

#65, Tubby benefited from the Pitino leftovers until they all either graduated or transferred. Tubby was a lousy recruiter and it showed in the talentless teams we had near the end of his time here. BCG was/is left with those remnants and is trying to rebuild–it takes time. However, his coaching style seems to completely suck ass early in the year. Too much time spent on f*cking boot camp and not enough time on playing the game and preparing for opponents…to beat VMI you need to: GUARD THE 3!!!! Rotate shitloads of players and wear them down!!!! GET THE F*CKING BALL TO PP!!! AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHH!!!!!!!

  69. fritos Says:

66: If Coach continually molds the gameplan to his personnel, at what point does his personnel become adept at his system?
Once again, our overzealous and fanatical minds have brought us woe. Take some time to understand how Coach runs a program and you will be able to enjoy the rebuilding process even more.

  70. 10, 2, and 4 Says:

It’s back to crazy talk around here all of a sudden, Sagacious. Here we go again, I guess. Once this stink gets out of the bottle, it’s hard to put it back. It’s sad, man.

  71. BillyClyde4President Says:

Gardner-Webb, VMI, who’s next??? If Deleware State and/or Longwood comes into RUPP and presses all game and shoots uncontested 3’s, then we could be looking at 0-4!!!!! Gillsipie needs to know that there are other defenses out there rather than man to man.

  72. westcoastukfan Says:

#66–what system is that??? Losing to GW and VMI??? WE HAVE NEVER LOST TO SHITTY PROGRAMS LIKE THAT WITH ANY UK COACH!!! BCG IS A GOOD GUY, BUT SHIT, SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE ON HOW HE PREPS TEAMS EARLY IN THE YEAR. OR MAYBE WE SHOULD PLAY HS TEAMS THE FIRST 3-4 GAMES TO ENSURE THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!!!

  73. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

At this point, I’d rather have BCG coaching my team with 5 seconds left down by 1 than Tubby.

Did a Tubby ever execute what he wrote in the huddle in those moments?

  74. BillyClyde4President Says:

Did Tubby ever lose to VMI and Gardner-Webb?

  75. Duke_Fan_Comes_In_Peace Says:

We have a great atmosphere at Cameron. Matt knows where I’m coming from. I have noticed in the past all the old people at Rupp on television.

Yeah, nailbitter tonight against Rhode Island, but 3 - 0 is the bottom line so far for us. Please kick the hell out of NC Tuesday.

  76. BillyClyde4President Says:

In case you all don’t know, Gillispie is now 18-14 as UK’s coach!!!! Three of those fourteen losses have come in RUPP to:

    1. Gardner-Webb
    2. San Diego
    3. VMI

    Need I say more?

  77. fritos Says:

73: Shitty programs? They only lead the nation in scoring and steals the past 2 seasons.
Check Jon Scott’s page, I’m sure you’ll find all kinds of upset losses in every era of UK basketball history.

As far as his defensive system… Coach’s philosophy is based on toughness, defensive transition and “in your face” man defense. Gillispie uses the half court shell drill to set the mentality for his defense. The 12-point focus of this drill is man pressure, help side defense, pass denial position, talking, front the cutter, jump to the ball, vision of the ball, defending screens, rotation, post dive, midline rule and the idea of “two guys guarding the ball.”

  78. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

Well, isn’t that convenient that tubby he loads our bench with Coury, The Member, Carter, Stewart, Porter, Harris and exits stage left before the Gardner Webb or VMI game are played.

  79. westcoastukfan Says:

    # 78 (Fritos), I don’t see any of that in the games we play. The DEFENSE SUCKS. The PG play sucks and where do we go from this??? We play UNC Tuesday night with absoluely ZERO confidence. BCG needs to prepare better early in the season; it’s pretty obvious…

  80. fritos Says:

Where’d you go Westcoast? I hope you’re on Scott’s page looking up past seasons stats to prove me wrong.

  81. fritos Says:

The talented depth of our team just played their first college game. Did you expect a flawless effort from our freshman point gaurd?
The defense was lackluster, it played right in to the hands of the opposition. It will get better.
Coach has put a lot of effort in to ensuring our recruiting success. Isn’t that what everybody wanted?

  82. westcoastukfan Says:

Don’t see ANY flops like these ealy in the season, especially back-to-back years. Don’t get me wrong Frito–I bleed blue. I want BCG to be the coach: he lives the game, respects the tradition and is a small town guy from Texas that will do well here. It just kills me seeing the program so low and we ALL expected so much more this season. Growing up in Eastern Kentucky and playing basketball in Kentucky and worshipping this awesome program makes you demand a certain level of play. BCG has got to respond Tuesday night (the team needs to make up for this shit) and this better not happen next year or Travis Ford will be the new coach at UK very soon after…

  83. ReverendBlue Says:

Our offense is much more fluid with BCG as coach. During the Tubby years, I got so tired of throwing 6 passes around the perimeter and then watching the point guard go one on one and force a shot as the shot clock counted down.

I know VMI’s losing record last year and their projected finish in their conference this year are not impressive. However, they were impressive Friday night. The way they shot the ball, they would’ve had a shot at beating a lot of D1 teams. That kind of pressure rattled Porter and Liggins. Porter is out of position at point guard and Liggins is just young and inexperienced.

  84. westcoastukfan Says:

Excuses, excuses…you should never lose to GW or VMI. NEVER, EVER. Like I said, BCG had better “bring it” or adios…

  85. westcoastukfan Says:

Speaking of Tubby…check out the Gophers playing tonight:

  86. dsoco88 Says:

    Upsets happen, quit crying about.

  87. fritos Says:

UK fans are going to be an increasingly sorry bunch in the next 10 to 15 years when athletic parity becomes more pronounced.

  88. westcoastukfan Says:

Man, Tubby left UK for the ugliest damn gym and uniforms/colors in NCAA Basketball. Can you say desperate? 10 point game currently…go Georgia State!

  89. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

    #88 - fritos - No, there’s just like 5% who don’t have a clue.

It all starts with this as your bench… Coury, The Member, Carter, Stewart, Porter, Harris

  90. westcoastukfan Says:

All those guys can contribute, rotate playes in and wear down defenses. Didn’t happent he last two games…Listen, I just haven’t see the defensive effort from this team. That’s why VMI beat us: LACK OF PLAYING HARD-NOSED DEFENSE. Pitino took role players and built a tough team that remain UNFORGETTABLE.

  91. fritos Says:

    5% don’t have a clue about what?

  92. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

    # 91 - westcoastukfan - The difference between the kids I listed and The Unforgetables is vast.

The Unforgetables were each solid fundamental college players who would give their all. None of the kids that Tubby left us have either.

  93. westcoastukfan Says:

But my point is Pitino used what he had and made it work. (BTW, those boys were solid, but not All-Americans, no Patterson and Meeks talent-wise). BCG should rotate players, wear down teams and give the ball to Liggins, forget Porter. Just because Porter is a hard-working practice player doesn’t mean he has what it takes to start at PG…get Jai Lucas! Maybe next year can be different…

  94. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

    # 92 - fritos - 5% of our fans don’t have a clue about expectations.

    1. Why KY could lose a game like VMI or Gardner Webb?
    2. What it takes to rebuild a program
    3. How long that should take
    4. What is reasonable to be expected out of this team

The first 5 games of the season simply do not mean much in the grad scheme of things. Some people just want to bitch. The 5%.

  95. Duke_Fan_Comes_In_Peace Says:

That Jodie Meeks kid is pretty good.

  96. westcoastukfan Says:

NO TOP PROGRAM WOULD EVER EXPECT OR EXCEPT LOSING TO BOTTOM TIER TEAMS. YOU MY FRIEND ARE EXCEPTING THIS. I’M NOT…BCG IS A HIGHLY PAID COACH. HE HAS TALENT AND A LOT OF BODIES. HE NEEDS TO FIND A BETTER WAY, BECAUSE WHAT HE DOES CURRENTLY, SUCKS. NOT HATING, JUST FACTS…WE NEED TO PLAY GREAT TUESDAY NIGHT…

  97. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

#94 - westcoastukfan - I understand your point. I’m saying Pitino had more to work with. Mashburn was with those guys as well.

Currently we have too many guys that Tubby left us that have serious fundamental flaws in their games.

Our future is brighter with the recruiting BCG has done, but until we get a bench with experienced fundamentally solid basketball players we will struggle with certain matchups. Less this year than last fortunately but Meeks better learn to play the team game in transition better.

  98. westcoastukfan Says:

Tubby is struggling, only up 8…

  99. CatSmitty Says:

No matter what Billy G. accomplishments in the future at UK, nothing and I mean nothing, will erase the stain of Gardner Webb, San Diego St., Houston and now VMI. Every game is important and cat fans deserve to feel like we can win them all. Losing a hard fought contest is no shame but losing repeatedly to lower level schools is unexceptable. NC is closing in on our victory lead and when that happens the honeymoon will be over if its not already.

  100. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

I’m talking to the same guy with several usernames. He can’t spell ACCEPTABLE regardless of how he’s logged in. lol

  101. westcoastukfan Says:

CatSmitty Says– I’m with you. Completely unacceptable to lose these games. I don’t expect championships every year–I do expect 20-some win seasons, do well in the SEC and be ranked in the Top 25. Every once in a while you win a championship. Pretty much the way it used to be…

  102. CatSmitty Says:

I have one username that is used on multiple sites and of course when the spelling Nazi appears that means they have nothing useful to contribute. Up Yours 101!!!

  103. Clandestine Says:

“Fans” who want to fire Gillispie are fools. And they make the rest of us look it idiots to the rest of the country.

  104. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

Whining like a girl about an early season loss when a program is rebuilding with a 1 year reloaded bench is not useful contribution even when it’s misspelled.

  105. boots45 Says:

It was our first game with new players and essentially inexperienced, shakey junior and wild freshman point guards. We lost Ramel, Joe, and Derrick. Perry Stevenson played soft (no matter the stats). PP was froze out. AND down the stretch Meeks came up lame.

I’m not an apologist but the recipe was there. What I blame Billy for was not putting a stop to the crazy play. Long Passes, circus passes, not playing long enough on offense, soft play around the basket. Just pitiful and exactly what teams like VMI hope you do. Also I think he should have made sure Miller was in the game at the end. He seemed to be the only player who knew what was required against the pressure.

    But…I still believe.

  106. westcoastukfan Says:

Not wanting to fire BCG–he just needs to show MAJOR improvement in early games each season. What will you guys say if we lose our opener in 2009-2010? Still rebuilding? Come on, we should never lose to VMI or GW…

  107. fritos Says:

95: I’d up that to about 15%… and 50% of all message board posters (not including truebluekentucky.com, which has the highest concentration of mature, knowledgeable posters and contributors by far).

  108. westcoastukfan Says:

    Minnesota wins by 8…Tubby survives.

  109. CatSmitty Says:

I’m not whining merely stating facts, nor did I call for BG to be fired. If you weren’t such a fool you would realize by looking back over the years that no UK coach not even Eddie Sutton lost consistently to these kind of teams. I hope they redeem themselves Tue. nt. but he needs to understand that all games are important to Cat fans and act accordingly. Enough is enough. Your contribution seems to be name calling. Be a man, if thats what you truly are!!!

  110. Brick Tamland 2.0 Says:

I dont get it. we get on Lousiville fans for supporting their team when they are winning, and them not showing up when they lose.

Yet, some of us are doing the same thing. Sure, VMI is a HUGE dissappointment, but really? Is firing Billy a good option? Starting all over again, possibly losing Ferguson and any other recruits for the future. Dare i say, Daniel Orton tries to back out?
Let’s ride this out. Lets just say we beat NC. everyone will praise billy for how well he turned the team around. dont be so quick to put blame soley on him.

  111. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

Any coach needs 3 years at a program. People who call for their head before that especially considering what BCG has done so far are just letting others know how little value their analysis is worth.

We could lose a game early in the season (first 3 - 5 games) every year for the next 50 years and I won’t be the least concerned as long as we start getting back to the Final Four every 5.

  112. fritos Says:

I remember one year we lost to Athletes in Action…that team turned out pretty decent.

  113. westcoastukfan Says:

I don’t think we’re asking for BCG to step down. We just want a competitive team that doesn’t lose at home to VMI. Is that asking for to much???

  114. TheGuyPitinoCantFindOnHisBenchToGuardLiggins Says:

#100 - CatSmitty - You stated this, “NC is closing in on our victory lead and when that happens..”

WHEN THAT HAPPENS???? Typical crap that floats around when the rains come and clogs up the sewer. Funny how you think that’s contributing.

  115. armstrong0989 Says:

I think the team was looking ahead to North Carolina and took this game for granted. I’ll be surprised if we don’t have a much better game when we play the heels.

  116. SagaciousMind Says:

It’s been one freaking game against a team, like someone said, that led the nation in points and steals last year. UK will more than likely never meet a team like VMI…no one was over 6′6″ and most teams play a post game. Gillispie has already taken full blame stating he didnt feel like he did enough to prepare for that game. I think maybe the players and coaches thought it was a cake game and didnt take care of business. A game like that will not be seen again and I would say UK plays UNC way better than most people think. Yeah the loss sucks, but its a loss and it is what it is. Maybe it’s a blessing, now they know they have to play hard against everyone and they still have work to do. I’m not even worked up about this loss because it will be the last one like that. Unlike some of you so called UK fans, I believe in the players and coaches.

  117. pdadave Says:

I was at the Gardner Webb game last year and the VMI game this year, obviously VMI watched the
tape of the GW game. Both games looked exactly alike. We got hit in the mouth and BG didn’t
know how to defend it. I have no friggin idea how don’t guard the 3 they way we didn’t. Every
player VMI had could shoot the 3, and we just gave it to them. Not even a hand in their face.
I was taught you get burned once and the next time it better not happen. When your down 20 points
it takes way to much energy to come back and take the lead and keep it. I don’t think anybody
needs to get fired. But come on how many times do you have to get burnt before something changes!!!!

  118. Adding Insult to Upsets (Kentucky Basketball) Says:
